Borgomale e il suo castello

Borgomale

The village’s name originates from the legendary story of Nella of Cortemilia, who was imprisoned in the village’s castle so as not to submit to the lusts of the local squire Lionello.

“Village of Evil” then, even though the village looks like a cozy hamlet, squeezed around the castle.

Of some interest is the church of St. Eusebius, which houses the gilded wooden statue of the Virgin of Mount Carmel.

The patronal feast on the first Sunday in July is dedicated to the Virgin.

Borgomale also proves interesting for the scenic views that can be admired by driving along State Road 29 or up the hill in the direction of Lequio Berria.

Our history

History tells us that Borgomale was first owned by the church and then by the marquis of Ceva and Cortemilia, then by the Del Carretto and Falletti families.

Borgomale (196 pop.). It stands on a hillside, intersected by the provincial road from Alba to. Savona, with parish church of St. Eusebius the priest, built in 1668. Ancient castle. Charitable congregation. Wheat, molasses, grapes, walnuts, and livestock.

Historical notes.-It is mentioned in a charter of 899 by Staurasius, bishop of Asti, and in the division of the Aleramic marquises of Vasto in 1142 it fell to the marquises of Ceva and Cortemilia. It was then taken over by the marquis of Saluzzo, removing it from the Del Carrettos, but, having returned under the rule of the marquises of Monferrato, it was ceded by them, in the peace of Cherasco, to the duke of Savoy.
