In the hills of the Alta Langa Astigiana that divide the Belbo valley from the Bormida valley, over 500 meters above sea level, three kilometers of hilly profile draw the amphitheater of Borgo Isolabella, facing the Bormida river.
Isolabella della Croce, one of the 8 wine producers of the smallest Italian DOC, Loazzolo, is based in this unique setting.
This name, which defines both the small town with its 350 inhabitants and the wine produced here, has great value in the world of wine lovers, for its rarity and quality.
It is a sweet wine made exclusively from Moscato grapes, dried and possibly attacked by noble rot; there are 5 hectares in the world, confined precisely to the homonymous town.
The Isolabella della Croce family has been linked to this territory for generations, and it increases its value in 15 hectares which Lodovico, Maria Teresa and Luigi skillfully vinify on steep slopes, surrounded by woods.
The production choices are designed in favor and in total respect of Loazzolo's unique terroir.
To safeguard it the Isolabella della Croce exclude the use of chemical herbicides, and adopt a system of natural defense of the vineyard with symbiotic plant mushrooms.
The supply of copper and sulfur to protect against mildew and oidium is also cautious, according to the legislation of biodynamic viticulture.
Ten hectares of vineyards are in Loazzolo, where varieties suitable for the cooler climate of the high hills are grown, which make their aromatic characteristics strong:
- Moscato of Canelli, from which they make, in addition to the award-winning “Valdiserre” Moscato d’Asti DOCG Canelli, also the smallest Italian DOC, the late harvest Loazzolo DOC;
- Pinot Noir vinified in red that gives life to the “Bricco del Falco”, a wine awarded by several international competitions and a finalist in Gambero Rosso’s “tre bicchieri”;
- Sauvignon blanc in the highest vineyard (540 m), vinified through the Vinooxygen, a technology patented by the company oenologist for the exaltation of the aromas of the vine, with a net lowering of sulphites and a lower environmental impact;
- Chardonnay vinified entirely in wood to enhance its characteristics and make it a very long-lasting wine
The remaining 5 hectares are instead between Calamandrana and Nizza, fulcrums for the production of Barbera.
From here derive the most structured wines, the “Augusta” Nizza DOCG, the “Maria Teresa” and the “Serena” Barbera d ‘Asti and Superiore, and the red Monferrato “Superlodo”.
The latest arrivals
