The Armando Piazzo winery is a historic winery in the Langhe region that has been authentically telling the story of the area’s winemaking tradition for three generations.
Born from the vision of Armando Piazzo and the indispensable and continuing presence of his wife Gemma Veglia, it has been able to grow while remaining firmly anchored in its family values.
Today it covers more than 70 hectares of vineyards, from which some of the area’s most representative wines, such as Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera, Arneis and Alta Langa, come to life.
To visit the company is to get in touch with that pioneering spirit that still lingers in the hills, where a sense of belonging and sharing are an integral part of the experience.
A philosophy that puts relationships at the center
Underlying the family project is not only the pursuit of excellence in the vineyard and winery, but also the desire to create value through relationships.
Welcoming with warmth, fostering dialogue and establishing authentic bonds is an integral part of the winery’s identity. Each visit is thus transformed into a moment of exchange and growth, because it is the human relationship that truly tells what is behind each bottle.

Armando Piazzo is a historic winery in the Langhe, family-run for three generations
An ancient ritual, marked by hard work and tradition
La sede della cantina è la stessa dove tutto è iniziato negli anni ’60 del secolo scorso

A story that
begins in 1960
in Alba
The Piazzo winery's roots go back to the 1960s, to a corner of the Piedmont hills just outside Alba called San Rocco Seno d'Elvio.
It all began with Armando Piazzo and Gemma Veglia, a young and tenacious couple from farming families.
Animated by a deep passion for the land and a bold vision, they faced the difficulties of an era marked by the Fenoglian Malora and realized their dream of dedicating themselves to viticulture, buying a farmstead on the outskirts of Alba, in San Rocco Seno d'Elvio. It is here that they lay the foundations of a project that is now fully consolidated.
Their foresight was revealed early on: they chose to invest in nebbiolo, the grape variety that would in time become the very symbol of the Langhe and the basis of some of the world's most highly regarded wines.
Over the years, they bought new land and converted it to the cultivation of this noble variety, until 1979, the year of the first vinification. Three years later, those same grapes will give birth to the first Barbaresco signed Piazzo.
The generational transition
When daughter Marina and husband Franco joined the company, they fully shared its spirit and vision, contributing enthusiasm and new ideas.
It was thanks to this new momentum that the first Barolo was born in 1985 — another great source of pride.
The project continues to grow and, with it, so does the company's acreage, which now reaches more than 70 hectares entirely planted with vineyards.
In 2007 the management of the company officially passed into the hands of Marina and Franco, who continue the path traced by Armando and Gemma with dedication and respect for the origins.
The third generation
Soon after, sons Simone and Marco also decided to join the company. After completing their studies at the Umberto I School of Enology in Alba, they bring with them new skills and a contemporary outlook.
They thus began to integrate innovative techniques with the experience gained by previous generations, propelling the winery into the future without ever losing its identity.
Even today, the company's headquarters remains the original one, a symbol of a deep connection with the territory and family history, just as the values transmitted by Armando and Gemma live on in every daily choice.
The Wines
The philosophy is to offer inclusive wines: the wide range of labels meets the taste of the connoisseur and the neophyte
The strength of the Piazzo winery lies in a clear and consistent identity: enhancing the territory through its most representative grape varieties, first and foremost Nebbiolo.
On about 70 hectares of property, as much as 60 percent is dedicated to this variety, from which different and complementary expressions such as Barolo, Barbaresco and Langhe Nebbiolo are born.
The three main lines
The classics
They are wines born from the blending of grapes from different vineyards, which tell a production philosophy oriented towards balance and harmony. Their taste profile is modern, defined by finesse, elegance and great drinkability.
Selections
The selections come from individual vineyards, which are often MGAs (additional geographical mentions). These crus are distinguished by their complexity and structure and tell the story of the terroir from which they originate.
Reserves
These are niche productions and represent the qualitative pinnacle of the winery. These wines are intended for long aging and are highly appreciated by discerning palates.
Some important labels to mention
Let’s start with Barbera d’Alba Superiore Mugiòt is produced in limited quantities. The climatic characteristics, vineyard exposure and soil composition give it structure, roundness on the palate and remarkable longevity.
This is followed by different interpretations of Barbaresco: Fratin, Pajorè (from the famous Treiso vineyard), Argè-a tribute to the winery’s origins through the names Armando and Gemma-and finally the Vigna Giaia Riserva, a selection of fine grapes from the Nervo cru, among the most vocated in the appellation.
Two notable whites complete the range: the Roero Arneis Cortine, made from grapes grown in the vineyard of the same name in Guarene, and theAlta Langa Ritorno, an expression of a recent family project linked to the Piazzo family’s origins in San Bovo.

Visits & Tastings
Guided tastings are a time to learn about the wines and the history of the winery
The tour of the winery begins on the panoramic terrace, where Cristina or Elena tell the story of the winery and the surrounding area.
Here we discover the meaning of the company logo, which depicts a cart loaded with grapes pulled by oxen, and the origin of the name “Mugiòt,” which is linked to Barbera Superiore.
We then proceed to the winemaking and aging rooms, where the main production processes (maceration, fermentation, and pressing) are explained in a clear and accessible way, thanks in part to the support of explanatory panels with intuitive graphics.
The visit ends in the tasting room, where it is possible to taste the winery’s wines.
During the tour, you may happen to meet a member of the Piazzo family or Grandma Gemma, a silent but central figure who represents the historical memory of the winery.

Simone, the first son of Marina and Franco, graduated from the Alba School of Enology. He mainly handles commercial operations and guides visitors through the winery and vineyards
During the visit, guests learn about the origin of the name of the winery’s most iconic wine
When using small barrels, the winery takes several factors into account: current consumer tastes, climate change, its own vision of wine, and of course, the specific characteristics of the barrels themselves
Refinement
Conscious use of wood to enhance the identity of reds: elegance, balance and respect for the wine
The Piazzo style is distinguished by the search for harmony and finesse. For the aging of red wines, the winery favors the use of French oak barrels over barriques, reserving the latter for selective and targeted use.
When barrels are used, they are chosen to be low toasted to impart delicate notes without covering the wine’s original character.
While a barrel is usually used for about 4 years, in the cellar it is used up to the seventh year, dividing the wine into different batches according to the maturity of the barrels.
This modulated approach makes it possible to preserve the typicality of Barbera, Barbaresco and Barolo, while aiming for a non-opulent elegance-a choice that reflects a more balanced vision than in the past, when the use of new wood was more pronounced.
Virtuous commitment and environmental sustainability

In the cellar, the winemaking processes are explained clearly, with the help of informative panels and intuitive graphics
They represent the third generation and work with passion and dedication to carry on the family tradition
The name comes from the nickname of founder Armando Piazzo and is entirely dedicated to growing Barbera vines
