Coazzolo

Perched on a hill between the Langhe and Monferrato regions, sits Coazzolo, an agricultural village of ancient origins which has historically engaged in the cultivation of the vine and the production of excellent wines.

The town is dominated by the castle with its imposing walls.

The Parish Church of St. Siro bishop, late Baroque, was built in the mid-600.The church of S. Gallo is a chapel dedicated to St. Mary of Carmel and was built in 1689 by Giacomo Spessa.

British artist David Tremlett painted the frescoes on the 17th-century walls of the “Chiesetta” – literally “little church” – in this small municipality in Asti’s Moscato hills,

Between the 14th and 20th of August, Coazzolo hosts a number of events linked to the Assumption day festival: a traditional village festival offering local food and wine.

This proven mix of various entertaining events has always been appreciated by both residents and tourists, attracted by the beautiful hills and the excellent local wines.

History

Coazzolo can boast ancient pre-Roman origins, about which different intertwined theories have been suggested.

In Roman times it was a village under the name of Coatolium.

Probably around the year one thousand the castle was built on the highest point of the area overlooking the Tinella valley.

The first official document found, citing Coazzolo, dates back to 13 April 1196.

At the end of the thirteenth century Coazzolo, which belonged to the diocese of Alba, was conquered by the Astesi family and the bishop of Alba was forced to sell all his possessions to the Cacherano of Asti family.

In 1533, with the treaty of Chateau Cambrésis, the fief was granted to Beatrice of Portugal, wife of Charles III of Savoy.
