Mombarcaro

Mombarcaro, that once was called Monte delle Barche (boats’ mount), is the summit of the Langhe: from here you can get a great view, until Ligure sea.

Built on a hill, it keeps one of the most interesting historical centres of Alta Langa.

It was once protected by high walls, of which a medieval arc dated back to the 13th century is the only part that still remains.

A walk trough the roads of the village, paved with little red bricks, could be a very pleasant way to discover sun-dials, typical corners, strange chimneys.

Precious frescoes, which decorated the old parish church of San Pietro, have been recently brought in the new one.

Today it is a holiday centre for those who love country tourism, made by walks trough the woods and quiet.

History

Mombarcaro has been founded in the Roman era, as shows a tombstone preserved in the Historical Museum. The feud was long disputed by the marquis of Ceva, of Monferrato and of Saluzzo, until it was acquired by the Savoia.
