Sommariva del Bosco

The houses of the old part of the town are placed round the castle; the narrow streets of the medieval quartier are lovely.

Historically and architecturally interesting ig the baroque parish church of saint James andPhilip, built for the Acaja family, with the over-30-meters tall bell tower. Inside there are many frescos by Morgari.

On the road to Scaramagna, there’s the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine di San Giovanni, built around the year 1600, on the place where once stood a chapel built in 1424.

Rich in art pieces and decorations, it holds a wooden statue of Stefano Maria Clemente, made in 1828, and some pictures by Operti.

Farming in Sommariva is a fruitful activity; there are vineyards on the hills, and fruit, vegetables and cattle are cared after.

History

Sommariva is first referred to in 1059, when Riccardo de Summariva sold a part of its territory to the abbey of Santa Maria di Caramagna.

Owned by the Roero and Savoia families, since 1733 it was given as a present to the marquis Seyssel, whose family still owns the castle and park.
