Underground Alba is a tour guided by a professional archaeologist that includes a visit to three underground stops among the 32 on the city’s archaeological route, plus a final stop at the Church of San Giuseppe, with a guided tour of the museum sections and the chance to climb the bell tower with a discounted ticket (€1.00).

Itineraries vary from date to date.

The tour lasts approximately 1h 45 minutes.

Movements between underground stops are above ground and provide an opportunity to enjoy significant glimpses of the historic center.

The meeting point is in Piazza Risorgimento (known as “Piazza del Duomo”), in front of the town hall or the tourist office (house number 1 or 2)

A bit of history

Since the days of Alba Pompeia (as the city was called in the centuries of Roman times), what is now the historic center has seen generations of cities succeed one after another in the same place.

The medieval city grew on the remains of the Roman one, the modern one took its place without completely erasing it, and so on, until the current city, which is unknowingly shaped by the urban features of Alba Pompeia.

Much of the last two thousand years of history remains in the belly of the city’s subsoil, just a few meters below the streets and sidewalks—fragments of lost cities and ancestors of today’s Alba.

Fragments that make up the rich heritage of the F. Eusebio Museum, the city’s Monumental Archaeological Route, and its numerous underground paths.

The Roman temple, theater and forum, mosaics and domus, ancient walls, the first baptismal font, and vanished medieval towers….come discover the city’s underground roots in the company of a professional archaeologist!
