If we want to talk about historical wineries in the Langhe, those that have overcome critical phases and built the future of successive generations, we cannot forget Cantina Moscone, with no less than two centuries of winemaking history behind it.
The face of the winery today is that of Sara Moscone, who, together with her cousin Marco, cultivates the family vineyards in Monforte d’Alba, writing a new page for the winery, free from conditions and conditioning, in a constant search for the perfect marriage of yesterday, today and tomorrow.
Visitors are welcomed in the new winery in La Morra, inside a large room dedicated to tastings and events.
The goal is to prioritize the direct experience of the wine, dedicating the right amount of time to discovering the product, telling the story of the company’s philosophy and production techniques, with the possibility of going outdoors and visiting the vineyards.
Sara and Marco Moscone together with the staff of the Cantina, which has made hospitality its strong point
A story that
begins in 1877
in Monforte d’Alba
A family-run business for four generations, with a history that traces all the stages of that of wine in the Langhe
The history of the winery winery originates in 1877, that date representing the founding date and coinciding with the birth of Giacinto Moscone, the great great grandfather of Sara Moscone, the current owner.
The winery, in its early days was an all-around farm and ranged from fruit and vegetables to animal husbandry. In particular, part of the production was concentrated on small fruits and vineyards, and the remainder was based on raising livestock for dairy and meat production.
The first generation purchased land suitable for viticulture, but it would not be until the second, with Angelo Moscone, Sara's grandfather, that the company acquired valuable plots in the S. Anna locality in Monforte d'Alba, determining the turning point in their history.
Land acquisition would be expanded after the war to 13 ha, and it is in Monforte that the winery's historic headquarters are still located.
December 8, 1958 is an important date in Angelo's life, as, on that date, the "Terre del Barolo" winery was founded and he was one of the first members and conferters, as well as a supporter of the project.
In the 1980s, the Langa lands surrounding the village of Barolo gained prestige, until they reached current priceless values, currently standing at 1- 1.5 million euros per ha.
Before the 1980s, most of the vineyards were Dolcetto and Barbera varieties. After that there is the conversion of these, to the Nebbiolo variety, also promoted by the fact that important cooperatives in the area, encouraged the purchase of this type of grape, allowing the producers an immediate economic return.
Members and producers also could decide whether to buy their Barolo later in the consortium and bottle it after 4 years, or just sell the grapes.
In fact, on the farm before the 2000s, the main activity was based on the production of grapes and the delivery of those grapes.
The third generation takes place in the 1990s and features Angelo's three sons: Livio, Sara's father, and Giacinto begin to take on winemaking as well, while father Angelo along with son Mariano, remain with the "Angelo and Mariano SCA" winery in grape production and as conferring parties.
In this generation, the contribution of grapes to third parties, is limited only to the surplus and 5 hectares of Nebbiolo da Barolo vineyards in Monforte in one of the world's most famous MGAs called "Bussia" are acquired.
This area faces southwest and is divided into an upper part, suitable for the production of Barolo "Bussia" and a lower part, bounded by a small road, from which Barolo classico is produced.
An additional land acquisition was made, in the hillside opposite the "Bussia" with eastern exposure and dedicated to Chardonnay production and is around 1.2 ha. The available acres then expanded to about 19.
On the other hand, as for the Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo vineyards, they too are arranged in Monforte, but around the historic winery in the S. Anna locality, for Barbera specifically in the Roddoli locality.
The last plots purchased were planted in 2022 and are located in Alba for Barbera and in Monticello d'Alba for Chardonnay, both of which have southeastern exposure.
The historic site, in Località S. Anna, results outside the area designated for the production of Nebbiolo grapes suitable for Barolo.
Thanks to the new winery, on the other hand, located at La Morra, the winery can produce all of its wines in one location without having to diversify winemaking and aging areas.
The new vineyards will go in part to increase the amount of Chardonnay, for the production of barricaded Chardonnay, which is already being tested from this year.
From 2005 and 2006, we inherit from Sara's grandmother, in the Roero area, specifically in Monticello d'Alba, Arneis vineyards, and from here the production of the current wine will begin.
And finally we come to the fourth generation featuring Marco Moscone, the current winemaker, and Sara Moscone.
The Wines
The wines embody a range of different expressions, winemaking philosophy and terroir
The cellar, is semi-hypogean, a very important element if you want to have an ideal natural temperature for production, wineaging and barrel storage.
Winemaking is done in full respect of the traditions of the Langa, however, the path of innovation undertaken allows for much greater precision and cleanliness than in the past.
The wines are produced by expert winemaker Marco Moscone, with the support of colleagues and the prestigious advice of Lanati, a winemaker involved in the production of some of the world’s most important wines.
A territory of excellence, boundless passion, a well-established history and a courageous, cutting-edge new generation are the elements we find in the wines produced, which determine their character and absolute quality.

Agricultural Method
Monforte is home to some of the highest hills in Barolo, exceeding 500 meters in height and offering a spectacle that is difficult to describe in words
The philosophy of this winery calls for a very light action on the part of the wood, without its aromas altering in any way the natural characteristics of the vine and the wine. In the glass we want to feel the vineyard, not the barrel. This is why it is important to carefully evaluate the cooper, the quality of the barrel, the origin of the wood, and the volume of the barrel
Thanks to the new premises in La Morra, where the Moscone winery has enlarged the space, but above all adopted new technologies, the aim is to reach a production of 150,000 bottles in the future, using only home-grown grapes
