The Cassino family’s presence in the Langa region has ancient origins, as is confirmed by a marriage certificate dating back to the Risorgimento period, still jealously preserved today.

At that time, these lands began to make a name for themselves as an area that produced great wine; a land which Vittorio Emanuele II was particularly attached to.

It appears that even back then, the members of the family owned and cultivated the vineyard La Castella, a plot of 4.50 hectares of land located between the two towns of Roddino and Sinio, which still remains the winery’s centre of production.

This vineyard, with its south-west exposure, has always ensured a high quality harvest with optimal maturation, producing wines with both character and unique aromas.

Dulfu (Adolfo) was the first to begin dedicating time to the vineyard with a certain consistency; he began working his land with passion after the war, selling grapes and wine to some friends. However, it was his son Silvio who transformed this production into a company, marketing the first bottles with the name “la Castella”.

In 2019 there was a new generational change: Monica, Silvio’s daughter, completed her studies in oenology and viticulture at the University of Geisenheim (Rhine Valley – Germany) and decided, along with the help of her sister Elena, to manage the business and take it forward with passion and interest and the desire to grow.

The Wines

Langhe Rossese Bianco DOC, Dolcetto d’Alba DOC and Nebbiolo d’Alba DOC are definitely the wines that distinguish the winery.

The winery’s choice is that of a traditional wine-making method for all wines, in order to fully reflect the territory from an aromatic point of view.

Dolcetto d’Alba, Langhe Rossese Bianco and Rosato are produced exclusively using steel tanks, while Barbera d’Alba and Nebbiolo d’Alba age in barriques barrels.

The smaller barrels are used only for the second phase, so as to avoid the wood’s features from excessively covering the wines’ features.

Integrated pest management has been adopted in the vineyard for years now, thus safeguarding the health of plants and the environment with innovative protection methods during all seasons.

Visits & Tastings

The peculiarity of this winery is the breath-taking view enjoyed overlooking the vineyards.

Weather permitting and if the group is interested, the tour begins with a walk among the rows of vines, where one of the famous ‘Big Bench’ is hidden.

The visit to the cellar includes a tour of the winemaking premises with an explanation of each production process, starting from the analysis of the grape bunches right up to the characteristics of the aging in wood and the storage of the bottles.

We then proceed with the tasting session, which includes a guided tasting of all the wines produced, starting with the Langhe Rossese Bianco and then with the Rosato, Dolcetto d’Alba, Barbera d’Alba and Nebbiolo d’Alba.

The tasting session is accompanied by typical products such as cold cuts, cheeses, breadsticks and hazelnuts.

A rare wine

Langhe Rossese Bianco, a little-known but very interesting white grape variety.

This variety was brought back several years ago in the Langa area.

After a period of experimentation, led by the University of Turin, some producers, including Cascina Castella, decided to keep it and make a new, special wine.

This vine produces few bunches, yet with amazing dimensions and intensity that allow them to be harvested relatively late compared to the other varieties.

The result is a wine rich in acidity and flavour, wine notes that make it an excellent aging product.

THE ROSSESE DI DOLCEACQUA

Perhaps many have already heard of the Rossese di Dolceacqua, a relative of our vine with ancient origins, grown in western Liguria. Unlike the langhetta version, this one has a red grape and gives life to an intense wine with a persistent bouquet.
