The Scarpa winery, established in 1854 at the behest of Venetian migrant Antonio Scarpa, covers part of the history of Piedmont wine-growing, particularly Monferrato.

The long fil rouge of the company, however, is linked to a production philosophy rather than to a territory, thanks to the intervention of Mario Pesce, a winemaker from Nizza.

The latter, trained in Burgundy, learned some important fundamentals such as low production yields, long macerations and fermentations, aging in large wooden barrels and above all the art of long bottle aging, and began to apply his knowledge to Monferrato wines.

His nephew Carlo, a less well-known figure but of equal substance for the development of the winery, insisted on the purchase of Poderi Bricchi, the 50-hectare single-body estate between Castel Rocchero and Acqui Terme, which is still the company headquarters today.

Starting from 2018, Scarpa no longer represents only high Monferrato quality: with new land in Verduno, La Morra, and Neive, the winery’s name is also making its way into the complex world of Barolo and Barbaresco.

The Wines

At Scarpa, red wine is at home, born in the footsteps of ancient Burgundy knowledge.

Every wine is the result of great attention and scrupulous manual labor in the vineyard that always puts the richness of biodiversity first.

Monoculture is seen as an enemy of quality, avoided thanks to the maintenance of woods, meadows left fallow, and the recent planting of lavender fields.

The reds

The production range is vast, ranging from Casa Scarpa, the most simple and everyday Barbera, to the complexity of Barbera Superiore, Barolo, and Barbaresco.

Long bottle aging gives Scarpa’s great reds their distinctive character and allows them to continue aging for a long time in the cellars.

Barbera Superiore “Bogliona”, for example, spends as much time in the bottle as is required for Barolo and Barbaresco.

Whites and Vermouth

Among the white wines produced, an important mention goes to Timorasso, an ancient Piedmontese grape saved from extinction with a unique personality, a must-try.

The three Vermouths are also not to be missed: the white and the red follow the historic recipe, using local herbs and Moscato d’Asti DOCG.

The unfiltered extra-dry vermouth, the latest addition to the production, is the absolute first of its kind in the world.
