Visit to the castle

The Conte Roero Castle is one of the most impressive and best preserved medieval buildings in the area, thanks to the fact that from 1372 to present it is the property of the same family, the Roero di Monticello, who made the castle their habitual residence.

The Bishops of Asti had it made to defend the boundaries of the county after the devastating descent of the Saracens on Alba in 920 AD.

It was damaged in 1187 during a prolonged siege which lasted almost three years and was rebuilt in 1348, when the Monticello fiefdom was taken over by the Malabaila.

In 1372, however, the Monticellesi, exasperated by their Lords’ injustices, asked for help from the Conti Roero or Rotarii who, after chasing away the Malabailas, received the territories of Monticello and Castagnito from the Bishop.

Book your visit to the castle on Saturdays and Sundays: ask for information directly at the restaurant.

The cost is 7€ per person.

Visits are also available during the week by booking for groups of at least 10 people.
