The La Badia winery, located in the municipality of Calosso, can be reached along the scenic roads of the Langa Astigiana, where vineyards mainly cultivated with Moscato and Barbera alternate with other types of crops and wooded areas.

The owners, the brothers Giuseppe and Marco Bussi, welcome guests directly, leading them to discover the territory and the products that have allowed the company to receive numerous awards and recommendations in important guides and magazines in the sector.

In the winery the knowledge and familiarity in wine production is not lacking.

In fact, the Bussi brothers entered the world of winemaking in the mid-1980s by working with Moscato grapes, when it was common practice for most young producers to gain experience with Barbera grapes.

In fact, Barbera demonstrates a better resistance to wine-making stress and consequently is able to better tolerate even the errors dictated by an initial inexperience.

It is therefore no coincidence, today, that the leading wines of the production are precisely Moscato d’Asti DOCG and Barbera d’Asti DOCG.

WineHunter Award and Corona Vinibuoni d’Italia 2025

Following the tastings conducted by the official The WineHunter Commissions, three labels from La Badia have been awarded the WineHunter Award 2025, the quality seal that for over thirty years has recognized excellence in the world of wine, food, spirits & beer.

These are Calosso DOC 2020 Red Award, Clotilde Barbera D’Asti Superiore DOCG Red Award, Tentazione Barbera D’Asti DOCG 2022 Gold Award.

This prestigious recognition, awarded by commissions with long experience in the sector, represents a prestigious passport for the food and wine market and opens access to exclusive events signed by The WineHunter, including the Previews and the Merano WineFestival which will be held from November 7 to 11, 2025.

Moscato d’Asti DOCG 2025 has instead achieved the Corona, a recognition obtained following the tastings and regional selections of the Vinibuoni d’Italia guide published by the Touring Club Italiano.

A story that
begins in 1987

in Calosso

As indicated in the cadastral maps, the company inherits its name from an old farmhouse purchased by the Bussi family

The name badia probably refers to a monastic community active in the vicinity of which traces have now been lost.

The same term also indicates the name of wild cliffs, the Badie, located not far from the farmhouse.

The winery's history begins in the 1900s. Grandfather Felice already produced a modest quantity of Moscato wine intended for bulk sale.

The current location, a typical Piedmontese courtyard, is the same as the original: a large building once shared among five families.

Here, Giuseppe and Marco's great-grandfather arrived as a servant, receiving it as an inheritance following his marriage to the owner's daughter.

Since 1987, the current owners have resumed their grandfather's activity, becoming wine-producing growers according to modern standards.

The production process is entirely managed by the family.

At the winery it is possible to meet the owners with their parents, Aldo and Lidia, Marco's wife, Maria, and their son Luca, an enology student.

The Wines

The production includes several labels, but the Bussi brothers have chosen to focus on the two grape varieties: Moscato and Barbera

Moscato d’Asti DOCG

Produced in 12,000 bottles annually, Moscato DOCG represents the first love regarding the grape processing that, although carried out quickly, requires care and attention.

To best express their potential, the grapes obtained from the Moscato vine require a sandy calcareous soil, well present in the Castiglione Tinella area.

The resulting product is a fragrant, harmonious wine with an intense bouquet featuring notes of citron, wildflowers, and acacia.

Barbera d’Asti DOCG

Barbera grapes are cultivated on the slope that from Calosso faces toward Agliano Terme: the clayey soil, heavier in nature, is particularly suitable for cultivating this vine.

Alongside the more recent plantings, vineyards from various acquisitions over previous decades alternate: some posts in the vineyard bear the date 1932.

Barbera DOCG is available in three different labels and the annual production is approximately 18,000 bottles.

  • Tentazione: vinified in the traditional way and aged for at least 6 months in large barrels.
  • Clotilde: only the best bunches are destined for the production of this Barbera Superiore and undergo a long maceration on the skins.
After an initial fermentation in stainless steel tanks, this wine is left to rest in barriques for at least 12 months.

The aforementioned reds, served at a temperature of about 18°, pair well with pasta dishes with meat sauce, roasts, grilled meats, and the traditional bagna càuda as well as aged cheeses and spicy cured meats.

Calosso DOC: a niche product

Calosso DOC is vinified from one of the oldest and rarest native Piedmontese vines, Gamba Rossa, better known locally as Gamba di Pernice.

Always present in this small part of the Asti territory, it risked extinction before being rediscovered and valued.

It has a ruby red color and spicy and balsamic notes reminiscent of green pepper and can age for 10-15 years.

Langa Astigiana

An authentic journey among hills, villages, and towers. Discovering a place that has managed to maintain its genuineness

The gentle hills that characterize this area are ideal for exploring on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback and express their best in late spring and autumn: this is in fact the most popular period for tourists from all over the world.

Nearby are some important centers from a cultural and food and wine perspective: Canelli, capital of Asti Spumante with its Wine Cathedrals, Santo Stefano Belbo, birthplace of writer Cesare Pavese, and Alba, capital of the White Truffle.

The store in Settimo Torinese

La Badia has opened a company store in Settimo Torinese, in Piazza Astengo 18, with the intention of bringing the genuineness of country wines directly to the city. Here, the wines of the production can be purchased in bottles or tapped directly from the barrel. In the bottles or the Bag in Box, 5 and 10 liters, the product remains fresh and intact and easy to transport. On the occasion of the holidays, baskets and personalized gift boxes are created.
