Cascina Rabaglio

Cellar in Barbaresco

This young company, founded in 2005, was born from the childhood memory of the oenologist Filippo Rigo and his sister Daniela, determined to bring back to life the work of their grandfather Giovanni Battista.

The two, with the help of their friend Andrea Salatin, retraced the paths that many years ago brought Giovanni to become passionate about the countryside: his business of grapes and hazelnuts was based in “Rabaj“, a village near Alba, from which Cascina Rabaglio today takes its name.

The company

The winery is located in Barbaresco, a beautiful village in the heart of the Langhe, as well as a UNESCO heritage known for the magnificence of its vineyards.

Filippo, Daniela and Andrea, who initially started with only hazel groves, have produced 5 different labels since 2012, carefully selecting the vineyards for each cultivar in the Alba, Treiso and Neive areas.

The choice was to vinify all the representative wines of the territory: from Nebbiolo grapes they make Nebbiolo d’Alba and the famous Barbaresco, from Dolcetto and Barbera the homonymous wines, ending with the Langhe Arneis and the Langhe Riesling.

The wines

  • Barbaresco DOCG: the pride of the company, grown in Barbaresco, ages for 8 months in French barriques and then passed in large Slavonian oak barrels.
  • Nebbiolo d’Alba DOC: produced with the vineyards of Alba, in Santa Rosalia. Aged 8 months in 500 liter tonneaux followed by bottling and resting for at least 6 months in bottles lying down.
  • Barbera d’Alba DOC: also grown in Alba, it ages 6 months in barriques, followed by bottling and resting for at least 6 months in bottles lying down.
  • Barbera d’Alba Superiore DOC: the grapes from the same Barbera vineyard are selected to be aged for a long time in barriques. Despite the aging it maintains a good acidity.
  • Dolcetto d’Alba DOC: is the classic wine of the Langhe, simple and easy to drink but able to amaze: the fragrant and floral aromas with a predominance of cherry and violet get along with the dry and harmonious flavor, with a body that is not extreme, but worthy.
  • Langhe Arneis DOC: this grape grown in Alba gives a wine of an unmistakable straw yellow color and intense aromas of peach and acacia flowers, chamomile, pineapple and yellow flowers. In the mouth it has a dry taste, elegant, harmonious, with a moderate acidity.

The visit

Being a small company, the visit is recommended for small groups of people.

Daniela Rigo will welcome you at the entrance and, after a brief explanation about the differences of the various vines with which they work, will lead you to the aging room to see barriques, wooden barrels and so on.

The visit then continues on the first floor, where a tasting takes place in a lovely room, lasting about 1h30 and with the cost of 10 € per person: it includes all 5 wines they produce, together with cheese, cold cuts and hazelnuts produced by them.

The tasting order goes from Arneis to Barbaresco, allowing you to perceive the growing development in intensity and to fully understand the characteristics of each wine.

Being the vineyards in the municipalities of Treiso and Alba, it is difficult to show them to visitors if not on request when booking. In Winter, the dirt roads make them almost completely unreachable.
