Spring atmospheres on the Periwinkle and Anemone Trail

A hike that pays homage to spring in the most picturesque and fairy-tale places of the Roero to discover the beautiful spring blooms, legendary places and quirky characters.

It is precisely in the municipality of Pocapaglia that the “Rocks” present themselves in their full and bursting beauty.

The territory

In fact, these extraordinary erosion phenomena offer very interesting naturalistic and geological insights.

We will walk along paths surrounded by primordial nature that still keeps alive some curious legends such as those of the Masca Micilina and the mysterious “Bric Milleocchi.”

We will visit the evocative and fairy-tale site of the Hermit’s Rock, so called because in the period between the two world wars a lone man lived in its ravines. Recounted in a story by Giovanni Arpino, the Pocapaglia hermit was an unusual and intriguing character in local history.

After walking along the edge of the spectacular Rocche della Ghia amphitheater we will enter the woods to reach the secluded and quiet Roero Forest Park: we will have a picnic lunch on the shores of the romantic Broom Lake.

The Park lies in the center of the last great forest of the Po Valley, the “Silva popularis” or “Nemus cellar.”

It is over one hundred hectares of land, a large expanse with one part old forest and the other part replanting.

We will return to the starting point by following a path of great botanical interest that runs through the Vallone della Verna whose name comes from the presence of beautiful specimens of black alder.

Past the Rio Verna on a stone path we will find ourselves in the area where the trail at this time of year skirts colorful blooms of periwinkles, liverwort anemones, dogtooth and other beautiful botanicals.

Precisely because of the beauty, spectacularity and naturalisticimportance of its fortresses, the municipality of Pocapaglia has been part of the “safeguard zone of the Roero’s forests and fortresses” since 2003 , together with 5 other municipalities.

A time of cheerful conviviality is planned at the end.
