Castle of Cigliè

in Cigliè

“Majestic is the sight of this building, standing tall between the simple houses you have to pass to reach it…” This description of an anonymous traveller in the Nineteenth century is perfect for the majestic medieval building dominating Ciglié.

The castle, first owned in 1215 by Guglielmo dei Borghesi, was later – in 1454 – of Guglielmo della Torre, then of the cardinal della Rovere; in 1535 it was bought by Amedeo Pensa from Mondovì. After 1550 it was restored as a Renaissance house.

In 1612 it became the feud of the Capris family and now is a private house.

Unfortunately, it’s not possible to visit it. But there’s a little road going all around it, allowing tourists to see the entrance ans the towers, along withthe central keep.

On the town square it’s possible to see some ancient houses, a rare trace of non-rural buildings in this area.
