2025 Harvest Some considerations on moscato bianco

September 4, 2025

For several days now, in the provinces of Asti, Cuneo and Alessandria, the harvest of moscato bianco grapes has begun.

In the vineyards the product is of good quality, same goes for quantity, generally reaching what was expected by the regulations, before the yield reduction decided by the Consortium.

From a climate perspective, the forecasts are also promising: the light rain on September 27th did not compromise the grape quality at all.

If the next two weeks, according to forecasts, will be sunny, certainly the 2025 vintage will be considered of excellent level for Moscato wine.

The fixed acidity is also at good levels, as are the aromatic profiles, linalool first and foremost.

The moscato harvest will presumably continue until October 8-10, with the high-altitude areas of Cuneo.

Some Testimonials

We heard from some interested voices, among winemakers and entrepreneurs.

We started the harvest on September 27th, finding excellent quality in the vineyards and good yield in the cellar. We supply most of the grapes to two important wineries in the sector, while a small part is destined for drying, with harvest in December and processing in our cellar, to obtain our passito wine called “Seren”.

We started vinification of moscato grapes on August 26th, with external suppliers: harvest areas in the municipalities of Castiglione Tinella and Santo Stefano Belbo. Excellent quality clusters, healthy and well-scented. The overall degree is around 11.5 – 11.7 baumé, while fixed acidity is around 5.5 g/l, pH is at values around 3.4-3.5. The malic acid data is interesting, around 2.1-1.3 g/l. Thanks to the grape health, in the vinification departments the processing cycles proceed regularly, pressing and flotation first and foremost.

We started collecting moscato grapes on Saturday, August 22nd. But just a few hours of work were enough to understand that this year, thanks to the grape quality, cellar operations would proceed without particular problems. In fact, pressing gives excellent yield, the pomace comes out of the presses well dried, filtrations, both tangential for the flower and vacuum for the lees, proceed regularly. The must now rests in refrigerated tanks at zero alcohol and at a temperature of 0-1 degrees, waiting to be collected by the Campari group for sparkling wine processes.

Sector Challenges Between Reduced Yields and Unstable Markets

Now we highlight, in summary, some sector issues taking inspiration from an interview with the President of the Asti Protection Consortium, Stefano Ricagno.

By reducing yields, the consortium aims to safeguard the Asti DOCG denomination.

We must take into account the yield reduction for the 2025 harvest campaign; in fact, it went from 100 to 90 quintals per hectare, of which 5 are destined for storage.

With these measures, the consortium aims to safeguard the denomination in a difficult and complex context, considering the confirmation of 15% American tariffs on wine and the complex issues in foreign markets.

In Russia, in particular, due to the war with Ukraine, there is a significant drop in orders.

There are also concerns regarding Moscato d’Asti: it risks being replaced with other less prestigious moscatos, but lower in price.
