The visit
The castle, formerly surrounded by moat and accessible by the drawbridge, can now be reached from the masonry ramp leading to the imposing entrance gate.
An ancient passage, now walled up, is visible in the southern tower, which apparently connected to the fortification on Margarita, now ruined.
The loggia on the courtyard preserves remains of a small chapel.
The frescoes in the “Hall of Arms” feature scenes from the life of Christ. A pictorial cycle was recently discovered in the deep niche: an Agnus Dei on the vault, to which is superimposed a large gem-studded cross. Two female monochrome medallions are flanked, and below these, the Del Carretto coat of arms. Stylistic and iconographic analysis points to the last decade of the 1300s.
The tour itinerary includes:
- Medieval village;
- Castello Marchesi dei Carretto;
- Parish Church of San Lorenzo, one of the most beautiful Renaissance churches in Piedmont declared a national monument;
- Church of St. Augustine now deconsecrated but the custodian of valuable 15th-century frescoes;
- Church of San Martino, also a national monument, with an admirable Romanesque bell tower and guardian inside of exquisite late Gothic frescoes, among the most important in the province of Cuneo.
History
It is along the ancient Salt Road, which connected Piedmont and Liguria, that Saliceto Castle is located.
The existence of a settlement above the hill, known as the Rosa, is documented before the 10th century, divided into Borgovero and Borgoforte, both of which were demolished by Saracens during a raid in the mid-10th century.
It belonged first to the bishop of Savona, then to the municipality of Asti and from 1251 to 1532 to the Del Carrettos, when Charles V gave it to the Savoys, who enfeoffed it to the Damiani family of Priocca.
In 1689 the castle was besieged by the Spanish army: shot, Don Martin of Aragon, commander of the Spanish army, died.
In revenge, the Iberians razed the building to the ground. Restored for the umpteenth time by the Del Carrettos, in 1796 Napoleon set up headquarters there for some time.
Built as a fortress between the 12th-13th centuries, it stands today as a mighty residential structure with a trapezoidal plan, reinforced by three towers at the corners. A fourth tower, the vestiges of which can be seen on the wall, was flattened during the Spanish siege.
Although the present structure is the result of later reconstructions the typical features of fortified architecture are still legible.
