Azienda San Michele was founded in 1973 in Neive, the heart of the Barbaresco production area, from an idea of the archpriest Don Giuseppe Cogno – the priest of the town – and three local winemakers.
Today the management of the winery is in the hands of Cogno Achille, brother of the archpriest, and the three sons of the founders: Lessio Renato, Nebiolo Alessandro and Cavallo Claudio. Each of the members independently takes care of a portion of the 6 hectares of vineyards, located in the Gallina, Cottà, Gaia and Albesani crus, which have always been counted among the noblest in the area.
The production is characterized solely by DOCG and DOC: Barbaresco DOCG, Moscato d’Asti DOCG, Roero Arneis DOCG, Barbera d’Alba DOC, Dolcetto d’Alba DOC and Langhe Nebbiolo DOC.
Since 2013, Azienda San Michele has equipped itself with a new winery, also in the Neive area, while maintaining the old address near the historic center as its registered office and wineshop.
The totality of the 6 hectares owned by the members is located within some of the most recognized crus in the area
Since 2013 the company has moved its cellar to a new environment, not far from the original location
The production is characterized solely by DOCG and DOC
A story that
begins in 1973
in Neive
A winery founded by the parish priest of the village of Neive and by three local winemakers
Azienda San Michele is the direct heir and successor to the quality policy of the Cantina del Parroco di Neive, an entity founded by Don Giuseppe Cogno, known in Italy and abroad for the nobility of its wines and for the excellent quality/price ratio, which ceased to exist upon the death of the archpriest.
Since its inception, Azienda San Michele has pursued the same objectives as the parent company, which stood out for its pursuit of quality even when such an attitude was not economically rewarding.
Today, the management of the company is handled by the 4 partners: Cogno Achille, brother of Don Giuseppe Cogno and the trait d'union between the old Cantina del Parroco di Neive and the current Azienda San Michele; Lessio Renato, a passionate winemaker and tireless cellarman; Nebiolo Alessandro, winemaker, cellarman, and symbol of corporate continuity; Cavallo Claudio, oenologist and winemaker.
The Wines
Production exclusively concerns DOC and DOCG wines, coming from the 6 hectares of owned land.
All the vineyard hectares are in the Bassa Langa area, with the exception of the Arneis vineyards which are instead located to the left of the Tanaro, in the Roero, a land particularly suited to the production of this grape variety.
The vineyards are cultivated by the individual partners who subsequently take care, collectively, of the vinification and marketing of the wine obtained, meticulously following every production and commercial phase.
The low yields per hectare with extensive use of cluster thinning, the location of the vineyards, and the cultivation and winemaking techniques, updated to technological progress while respecting tradition, guarantee the healthiness and excellence of the wines.
In consideration of the high fragmentation and displacement of the vineyards, by winery choice the company does not divide its wine production into different crus, seeking instead to obtain the maximum possible organoleptic quality from the blending of single-variety grapes.
The aspiration of Azienda San Michele is in fact to obtain, for each vintage of each grape variety, a consistent taste throughout its duration, concentrating efforts in order to obtain the best possible result.

Wine tasting
Azienda San Michele does not currently foresee a visit with tasting at the winery, but offers the possibility, after telephone contact, to organize a wine tasting.
This will take place at the point of sale, not far from the operating cellar. For this reason, should visitors' interest arise, it is possible to request a short visit to the winemaking environments at the end of the tasting.
