Morra, Monvigliero, Mosca.

The three letters “M” enclosed in the company logo tell and place the winery that has been based in Cascina Mosca since the early 1900s.

The Diego Morra Winery is located along the panoramic road that connects Alba and Verduno, a small town known as the sentinel of the Langhe, for its position as a historical garrison of the surrounding area.

On these hills, dedicated to the cultivation of the Nebbiolo grape, the company produces, among the other characteristic wines of the area, two types of Barolo DOCG.

The maximum expression of this wine is reached in the Monvigliero version, named after one of the best crus in the sub-areas of Barolo and especially Verduno.

The area is also the area of choice for Pelaverga, a native Piedmontese black grape variety, at the origin of one of the smallest DOCs in Italy.

A story that
begins in 1950

in Verduno

With Diego Morra, the family has now reached the third generation of winemakers.

Grandfather Domenico first and father Antonio then initially produce a small quantity of wine intended for family consumption, giving most of the grapes to the cellars in the area.

Alongside the vineyards, the family has always owned land destined for other types of crops, including 20 hectares of hazelnut groves.

The hazelnuts of there production are offered in combination with the wines during the tastings.

The company acquired modern traits starting from 2006 with the conclusion of Diego's studies at the Umberto I ° Institute, the oenological school of Alba.

The Diego Morra brand was born.

In the following years, the daily work was aimed both at the search for a high quality final product, and at the expansion of the owned land, selected through progressive acquisition processes.

In 2018, the works to expand the winery and the areas intended for reception and tasting began.

A path in progressive growth, in the constant attempt to improve, with constant commitment and dedication.

The company philosophy is well reflected in the project that Diego and his wife Francesca lead along the path traced by previous generations: respect for tradition, attention to modernity, search for quality, balance and elegance, respect for the consumer and for the territory.

The Wines

The vineyards are mainly cultivated with Nebbiolo, but with attention to all the varieties typical of the area

In fact, the production offers the most representative wines of the territory, characterized by elegance, finesse, breadth of aromas, velvety and persuasive tannins and an ever-present and recognizable vein of spices.

The vineyards are located in the best crus of Verduno, La Morra and Roddi.

The most representative labels

The identity of Verduno and the company is mainly identified in the Barolo DOCG Monvigliero and in the Verduno Pelaverga DOC.

The work in the vineyard and in the cellar are carried out personally by the owner Diego, advised by the many years of experience of his father Antonio, assisted by his friend and colleague Davide Cavallo and with the solid collaboration of Fidan Velkov.

Barolo DOCG Monvigliero

4 hectares of property, spread over three different exposures (south / south west and south east).

Within this precious sub-area of Barolo, from an annually selected portion, about 5,000 bottles of Barolo DOCG Monvigliero are obtained.

The best exposed grapes are preferred, having reached the best point of ripeness, and then they continue with the vinification characterized by a long and soft maceration.

Verduno Pelaverga DOC

Obtained exclusively from 2 hectares of property, it stands out for its fragrant aroma and naturally spicy and peppery scents.

These particularities are inherent in the DNA of the grape itself, by virtue of a molecule called Rotundone.

Pelaverga is a wine known for its versatility, excellent both as an aperitif and throughout the meal, as well as in combination with fish dishes, if served fresh.

Wood yes … But with moderation

The production choice is to emphasize the characteristics already present in the grapes and those representative of the soil and territory, avoiding to cover them with excessive hints of wood when you opt for this type of aging.

The aging in wood then takes place in 500-liter French oak tonneaux and in large barrels.

For the Barolo DOCG, older woods are preferably chosen, reserving the new tonneaux for a quick passage of the Barbera d’Alba DOC and Langhe Nebbiolo DOC.

The Monvigliero hill

It extends with gentle slopes to Verduno and has become a sub-area of production of Barolo DOCG due to its peculiarities.

Monvigliero is one of Verduno’s most prestigious crus and is one of the most representative of the entire Barolo area.

The proximity of the Tanaro river, which flows at the foot of the hill and the cool currents that rise during the night, positively influence the microclimate and the ripening of the grapes, providing the right humidity.

The vineyards, distributed in the form of an amphitheater and planted by grandfather Domenico, have an average age of about 42 years. The most recent are the result of subsequent replanting.

The work in the vineyard is carried out personally by Diego, flanked by the experience of his father Antonio and the precious collaboration of Fidan and Davide.

Exposure and favorable terrain

In this setting radiated by the sun’s rays throughout the day, there are 4 of the 16 hectares cultivated with Nebbiolo for Barolo.

The terrain that characterizes it is made up of deep blue-gray marl and whitish on the surface, alternating with sandstones.

The marls of Sant'Agata

The Barolo area, characterized by geological variability, is characterized here by the predominant presence of Marls of Sant’Agata Fossili, consisting mostly of fine, silty and clayey sediments which settled approximately between 11 and 7 million years ago.
