History
Palazzo Carignano was built at the behest of Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy-Carignano, based on a design by the Theatine father Guarino Guarini, who began construction in 1679.
It is one of the most striking and imposing palaces of seventeenth-century Italy, with a sinuous facade and simple brick cladding, preciously and originally worked.
The building was erected in the area used as stables by Prince Tommaso, progenitor of the cadet branch Savoia-Carignano, and originally had a C-shaped plan open to the gardens; the present quadrangular structure is due to the addition of the 19th-century building constructed to house the Italian Parliament, and finished in 1871, after the capital moved to Rome.
The central elliptical hall located in the seventeenth-century part, formerly used for parties, had been transformed in 1848 into the hall of the First Subalpine Parliament.
The palace houses the National Museum of the Italian Risorgimento in the halls of the piano nobile and the offices of the Polo Museale del Piemonte on the ground floor, as well as some offices of the Soprintendenza Belle Arti e Paesaggio of Turin.
Reopened to the public, thanks to the support of the Compagnia di San Paolo, in 2011 with an exhibition dedicated to Stefano Maria Legnani known as the Legnanino, the talented painter who decorated its interiors between the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, after half a century it is currently usable with a stable tour of the Midday apartment, also known as the Princes’ apartment.
It is an itinerary conceived ‘in the making,’ that is, destined to be expanded and enriched as the investigations undertaken increase the level of knowledge about the palace and the events and people who inhabited it.
