The Scarpa winery, founded in 1854 at the behest of the Venetian migrant Antonio Scarpa, covers part of the history of wine-growing Piedmont, in particular of Monferrato.
The long fil rouge of the company, however, is linked to a production philosophy rather than to a territory, thanks to the intervention of Mario Pesce, a winemaker from Nizza.
Mario, trained in Burgundy, learns some important fundamentals such as low production yields, long macerations and fermentations, refinements in large wooden barrels and above all the art of long bottle aging, and begins to apply his knowledge to wines from Monferrato.
His nephew Carlo, a lesser known figure, but of equal substance for the development of the winery, insists on the purchase of Poderi Bricchi, the 50-hectare estate between Castel Rocchero and Acqui Terme, still the company headquarters.
Starting from 2018 Scarpa no longer represents only the high quality of Monferrato: with new land in Verduno, La Morra and Neive, the name of the winery also makes its way into the complex world of Barolo and Barbaresco.
The Wines
At Scarpa, red wine is the king, born in the footsteps of the ancient knowledge of Burgundy.
Each wine is the result of great attention and a scrupulous workforce in the vineyard which always puts the richness of biodiversity first.
Monoculture is seen as an enemy of quality, avoided thanks to the maintenance of forests, meadows and the recent planting of lavender fields.
The Reds
The production range is vast, ranging from Casa Scarpa, the simplest and most everyday Barbera, to the complexity of Barbera Superiore, Barolo and Barbaresco.
The long refinements in the bottle give the great Scarpa reds their distinctive character and allow them to age longer in the cellars.
The Barbera Superiore “Bogliona“, for example, spends as much time in the bottle as is required for a Barolo and Barbaresco.
Whites and Vermouth
Among the whites produced, an important mention goes to Timorasso, an ancient Piedmontese grape saved from extinction and with a unique personality, worth trying.
The three Vermouths are also unmissable: the white and red follow the historical recipe, with the use of local herbs and Moscato d’Asti DOCG.
The unfiltered extra-dry vermouth, the latest addition to the production, is the first of its kind in the world.
