Adriano Grasso is a small winery of about six hectares located in Calosso, the first town in Monferrato bordering Santo Stefano Belbo and Castiglione Tinella.
This is the territory of choice for Barbera and Moscato d’Asti, characterized by soft hills which, starting from the Langa of Cuneo, cross the Asti area and reach the Alessandria plain.
Certified BIO since 2020, organic farming is practiced on the farm that respects the natural life cycles of the vineyard and is careful to minimize the impact of external factors, therefore also those caused by the hand of man.
A brave choice that starts from the love for nature and the maintenance of a healthy environment capable of generating beneficial effects for humans and grapes.
Tasting and didactic harvest
In addition to two different types of tastings, the new proposal of fall 2022 is the didactic harvest and crushing of the grapes as it was done in the old days, that is, with your feet: an activity that allows, while having fun, to discover the secrets of the most anticipated moment of the year alongside Adriano Grasso.
An alternative way to live a new experience in contact with a family business.
A story that
begins in 1900
in Calosso
The passion in telling the wine and the satisfaction in seeing it appreciated
After completing his studies at the Oenology School of Alba and following the achievement of a diploma in viticulture and enology at the University of Turin, Adriano chooses to devote himself, starting from 2014, to the family business.
The will is to modernize the production system and be able to tell the territory through its products.
The history of the winery is not so recent if we consider that his father, Giorgio, who is still an active part of the company, has a past as a producer-winemaker behind him.
Certainly a different way of making and marketing one's wine: at the time, it was a vinification mainly intended for the sale of bulk wine, with timid initiatives for the sale of bottled wine.
The visit to the Cellar was made by the passage of the usual customers who from February to May came to the company to buy Barbera.
Adriano's choice, which is also his dream, starts from here: investing in an already concrete reality with courage and trust, offering his customers the best possible quality with the products that this territory can offer.
The Wines
Adriano Grasso produces some of the most representative wines of the area: Moscato and Barbera d'Asti
Adriano produces a traditional Barbera d’Asti DOCG and a Superiore.
Both are produced from the vineyards close to the company: the territory of Calosso is in fact suitable for the cultivation of Barbera grapes due to the optimal exposure and the clayey soil which together with the climate gives color and the right acidity.
The Superiore version comes from the oldest vineyards, facing west: it is a powerful, complex, rich and elegant Barbera with velvety tannins.
Traditional Barbera ferments with natural indigenous yeasts that allow slow and constant fermentation.
It goes well with risotto with porcini mushrooms, with green agnolotti with Castelmagno fondue and red meats.
Classic Method Rosé Adele and Moscato Classic Method Doro
These are two important company wines: the first takes its name from Adriano’s daughter, the second is a tribute to his grandfather.
The classic method Rosè, produced in 1,500 bottles, is a feminine and elegant rosé, the result of a blend of two typical Piedmontese vines: 55% Nebbiolo and 45%. Barbera.
Fresh and mineral, its fine and persistent perlage gives notes of cherry, ginger and candied orange peel.
The Moscato Doro classic method is a small gem produced in about 500 examples and brings with it the typical characteristics of Moscato d’Asti.
It has a straw yellow color of medium intensity and a fine perlage rich in floral and vegetal notes.
Fresh and harmonious, well balanced between sweetness, acidity and structure.
The Gamba di Pernice: a bet for the future
A peculiar vine, typical of the area, is Gamba di Pernice, of which a recent plant is present in the company.
The homonymous wine will see the light in five years and is the fruit of one of the oldest Piedmontese vines.
Always present in this part of the Asti area, it is a rare red grape variety, almost lost in the early 1900s and recovered around the 90s of the last century.
Today it is fully exploited and its production is allowed in the municipalities of Calosso, Costigliole d’Asti and Castagnole delle Lanze.

Visits & Tastings
Weather permitting, the company is introduced during a short walk among the rows
From the vineyard we then move on to the winemaking rooms where there is an old manual wooden press dating back to the fifties and still used today.
Alcoholic fermentation is carried out by making a pied de cuve with natural yeasts.
The work in the cellar, after the new wines have finished fermentation, is limited to some racking, tasting and batonnage.
Refinement is done by storing the wines on the fermentation lees for 12 – 24 months to reflect the bouquet and terroir.

Attention and care of the vineyard for the production of a natural wine
According to Adriano, the winegrower, by intervening on the maintenance processes of the vineyard, thanks to measures such as the use and integration of organic matter can give the vine more energy and strength.
The management of weeds in the sub-row is done by interspersing the mowing with a shallow working of the soil, aimed at cutting the roots of the weeds.
The treatments against downy mildew and powdery mildew are made with the limited use of copper and sulfur-based products, while the fertilization is carried out with manure or compost.
When possible, green manure is used to give the soil a greater supply of organic matter.
