The Salt Road

Historical records about Albaretto della Torre reveal that in the early 1900s the village came alive with the passage of anchovy sellers, hardworking merchants who came from Liguria, particularly from the province of Imperia.

These fishermen traveled the historic Salt Road—actually not a single road, but rather a network of routes connecting the coast to the inland areas.

Their goal? To trade their precious salted products, such as anchovies and cod, and then return home with a cargo of local treasures: Spanish White beans, fine wine, and some hazelnuts, which were less cultivated at the time than they are today.

A journey that tells not only of commercial exchanges, but also of traditions and cultures intertwining in a fascinating union of history and taste.

These aspects of our territory deserve to be shared and celebrated, offering us the opportunity to highlight the cultural richness of this area.

Discovering them means fully appreciating what surrounds us in true LoveLanghe style.

Cod throwing

Among the anchovy sellers’ products, anchovies stood out, essential for bagna caoda.

Cod, rarer and more expensive, became the prize in a curious game: whoever threw it the farthest won it!

This is how cod throwing was born, a challenge that involved the entire village.

The tradition was revived thanks to the Albaretto painter Renato Cane, known as Caren, who created the first hand-painted wooden cod.

Since then, the game has become a highlight of the Fera dij Plandrun, the Idlers’ Fair held every last Sunday of November in Albaretto.

Today the festival features a craft market, local products, performances, concerts, roasted chestnuts, and lunch with polenta and cod.

The throwing competition, held on the street renamed Pala Mërluss, has three categories (women, men, children) and themed prizes: salted cod or anchovies.

Notable participants have included Cino Tortorella, the magician Zurlì, and Omar Pedrini, a singer-songwriter from Brescia and former leader of Timoria, Honorary Citizen of Albaretto della Torre since November 21, 2016.

This tradition lives on thanks to the commitment of Langa Viva and Pro Loco La Torre.

Cod in SensoVia

Cod is the protagonist of the loop trail In Search of Cod, approximately 4 km long around Albaretto della Torre.

It’s an easy and accessible walk, designed for everyone, combining nature, culture, and local flavors.

Along the route, special stops have been identified, each dedicated to one of the five senses, enriched with quizzes, curiosities, and insights.

The goal is to help people discover the territory in an active and fun way, through a playful-educational approach that allows you to learn more about the history, traditions, and gastronomic excellence of the Langhe.

  • Sight: the landscape and the village of Albaretto opening up before your eyes
  • Touch: the hazelnut groves, symbol of the Piedmont PGI hazelnut
  • Hearing: the sounds of nature echoing among the conifers
  • Smell: the fragrance of Alba white truffle in the oak forest
  • Taste: the world of bees and the honey produced from their hives

This route is part of the broader SensoVia project, created by LoveLanghe Tour, which invites you to discover the territory through the five senses, transforming the walk into an original, engaging, and interactive experience.
