The small family-run farm is located in the hills of the municipality of Calosso, in a valley that the family already inhabited in the 1800s, an area declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.

All Ca ‘d Tantin wines have been certified organic for over 20 years: both in the vineyard and in the cellar, the use of chemicals that would inevitably end up in the wine is strictly excluded.

Wine is consumed first and foremost by those who produce it, which is why it must be good and healthy, preferring quality over quantity.

This was already the thinking of grandfather Gioele, born in 1905, a man with an open and modern mentality, a forerunner of the ideals developed by his son Costantino and grandsons Andrea and Marco Venturino, his successors and today the owners of Ca ‘d Tantin.

A story that
begins in 1862

in Calosso

For generations the Venturino family has been making good healthy wines

As early as the late 1800s, great-grandfather Constantino Venturino cultivated the land still tended by his grandchildren and made the wine that the winery still produces today.

The brand name Ca 'd Tantin, Constantino's House in Piedmontese dialect, is chosen in his memory.

The company later passed into the hands of his son Gioele.

Precisely because of his modern vision and being an anticipator of ideas and conceptions, Gioele realized what his descendants would fully concretize and which culminated in 2001 with Organic Certification.

Today the company is still run on a family level, by Marco and Andrea Venturino, assisted by their father, who, like his great-grandfather, also bears the name Costantino.

The Wines

Grandfather Gioele taught that wine is made in the vineyard, reiterating the importance of a job well done between the rows

Production includes a wide range of wines, all certified organic. Each bottle is hand-numbered in order to further enhance its craftsmanship.

Prominent among the various types of wines typical of the area is Barbera d’Asti DOCG La Tosta, named after Marco and Andrea’s grandmother’s nickname, given to her because of her energetic character.

Flanking La Tosta are two versions of Barbera d’Asti DOCG Superiore, Tra i Confini and Milabute, the latter made with only grapes from the vineyard planted by his grandfather in 1943.

True gems of the production are the historic arneis-based Vermouth Torinese, produced in limited quantities, and strongly desired by Marco, and the Calosso DOC Gamba di Pernice native grape of Calosso and currently one of the smallest DOCs in Italy.

The Metodo Classico DOCG Tantin, from 100% Pinot Noir grapes, is suitable as an aperitif, goes well with risottos, fish-based first courses, crudités, sushi and is amazing with truffles.

From the crushing of 100% brachetto grapes, and following the drying of the bunches on the vine harvested in late October, we obtain Piemonte Brachetto Passito DOC Perpochi, ideal with chocolate, dry pastries or aged cheeses.

Completing the range are Piedmont Cabernet Sauvignon DOC Duvire, Monferrato Nebbiolo DOC Canòba, Monferrato Rosso DOC Armonia, Monferrato Bianco DOC Aveine, from 100 percent arneis grapes, and Brachetto Dry Rosé Wine Rosaviola.

Visits & Tastings

Booking as a couple or group allows for an exclusive experience

Ca ‘d Tantin welcomes groups of up to 12 people. Larger groups are requested to contact the company in advance.

Guests are greeted in the inner courtyard and, guided by Marco, reach the panoramic terrace in the vineyard, a place to relax where tastings are held in fine weather.

Introducing the company’s history, production philosophy and territory, we reach the winery, a historic building renovated in keeping with the Langa tradition.

Then takes place the evocative visit to the winemaking rooms, formerly home to the great-grandfather’s cellar, characterized by stone walls, exposed vaults and the classic crötin, or a small cave or niche dug into the tuff and used as a pantry by the farmers of Langa and Monferrato.

Here one can admire the steel tanks, the large barrels for aging red wines, the truncated conical vat for wood fermentation, and the small French oak barriques where the Barbera destined to obtain the Superiore designation ages.

The old, heavy wooden wine press, the well where water was once drawn, and a hundred or so bottles of wine produced by Grandpa Gioele, covered in the dust of decades, make a fine display.

Sustainability

Work in the vineyard and winery is carried out with respect for the environment and consumer health

The composition of the soil, characterized by the presence of marls, and an optimal southwest exposure of all the vineyards allow both to harvest all the grapes at the same time thanks to homogeneous ripening timings, and to obtain intense, structured, long-lived and tendentially alcoholic wines.

Work in the vineyard never stops and is carried out by hand or with the help of hoe, shears and small machinery: mowing, thinning, shoot tying, suckering, pole and wire maintenance.

Manual harvesting allows the best bunches to be selected for storage in the characteristic red perforated baskets.

The soil is enriched with mineral salts and nutrients through controlled grassing.

The phytosanitary treatments required to safeguard the vines are exclusively based on quarry sulfur, verdigris and pyrethrum, an insecticide of natural origin that is photosensitive and extracted from the flowers of a particular species of chrysanthemum.

Nearby

The hills that characterize this area are ideal for walking, biking or horseback riding. The town of Calosso is dominated by a castle and a quaint medieval village. The historic center then reveals an evocative underground itinerary, where crötin host tastings of typical dishes and wines during the Rapulè Fair, an event held on the third weekend of October. Between June and July, the traditional summer festival and food walk Cammina Cammina is staged. Near Calosso are some important towns: Canelli, with its Wine Cathedrals; Santo Stefano Belbo, birthplace of writer Cesare Pavese; and Alba, capital of the White Truffle.
