Arturo Bersano
Bersano is first and foremost a desire to protect and maintain agricultural culture, telling the world about the winemaking identity of the Piedmontese territory.
The company produces a wide range of typical local wines, produced in the Langhe and Monferrato where each soil gives the grapes unique characteristics.
Barolo, Barbera d’Asti, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo, Roero Arneis and Gavi and the sweet Brachetto and Moscato are some of the labels to discover during the company tour and guided tasting.
Bersano Philosophy
The Massimelli family, owners since 1985, is committed daily to spreading the ideals already pursued since the early 1900s by the founder Arturo Bersano, aware of the need to guard the essence of the territory as a precious asset, honoring the values passed down from previous generations.
Bersano has been cultivating the vineyards of Piedmont since 1907
The Bersano brand today holds the largest vineyard heritage in Piedmont: from the 230 hectares of property, the best bunches are selected, ensuring the best quality and controlling the entire production process.
An identity that is not only identified in the wines, but also in the presence of 10 farmsteads scattered throughout the countryside, symbol of a rural world capable of changing while maintaining a firm relationship with the past.
In this winery, the history of Piedmontese oenology continues to be written, shared with the visiting guest through stories, tastings and museum experiences of international importance.
Bersano is Piedmontese pride and represents its territory of origin in the world, with its presence in over 40 countries.
La Cremosina is the first vineyard purchased by the Bersano family in 1912
53 hectares under vine in the commune of Agliano an area with a great vocation for the production of Barbera d’Asti and Nizza DOCG
The company tour also includes a visit to the wine ageing and maturation rooms
A story that
begins in 1907
in Nizza Monferrato
Bersano is the guardian of elegance and loyalty to tradition
In 1912 Arturo Bersano, a lawyer by profession and winemaker by passion, purchased Cascina Cremosina and the surrounding vineyards in Nizza Monferrato.
The farmstead dates back to the 16th century and its place name, from the adjective hermosa meaning splendid, refers back to the ancient Spanish domains over the lands of Monferrato.
After taking over his father Giuseppe's company and making it one of the most renowned wineries in Piedmont, in 1961, as a passionate collector, Arturo Bersano founded the Museo delle Contadinerie, one of the first museums dedicated to the tools and implements of the farming world, today included in the list of UNESCO heritage sites.
A few years later, the Raccolta delle Stampe Bersano was born, one of the most extensive collections of prints, drawings, engravings and books on the theme of wine and viticulture.
1964 is the year of the Confraternita della Bagna Cauda, a congregation dedicated to the promotion of Piedmontese food and wine that counts illustrious names among its members.
In 1968, with the purchase of Cascina Badarina in Serralunga d’Alba, Bersano became one of the first producers to contribute decisively to the success of Barolo.
In the early seventies, Bersano, in poor health, sold the company.
Commendatore Ugo Massimelli acquired the business in 1985, modernizing and expanding it with the purchase of new vineyards and farmsteads in the most prestigious areas of Langhe and Monferrato.
2000 marks the beginning of a long journey that would lead to the birth of the new Nizza DOCG appellation, thanks to the recognition of the Nizza sub-zone.
Today his daughter Federica, flanked by her sisters and son, carries on the founder's philosophy, consolidating the Bersano brand and enhancing the company's heritage.
The Wines
Proprietary grapes processed and selected for uncompromising quality
Surrounding the 10 estate farmsteads are most of the vineyards arranged in the sunniest and best-exposed areas: each wine is produced in its chosen terroir, the characteristics of which are reflected in each glass served at the table.
With Bersano, you’re immediately in the vineyard.

I Cru
Over time, with the knowledge of each production area and its characteristics, we have understood the best that each vineyard can offer.
This farming wisdom made of traditions and cutting-edge production techniques has allowed us to identify the maximum quality potential and consciously implement the necessary efforts to achieve it.
There are two versions of Barolo, two of which are enhanced by the choice to vinify individual crus, that is, a specific area producing exclusively a certain type of fine wine.
Barolo DOCG is thus present in the Cannubi and Badarina versions. The former comes from the most important plot within the Barolo appellation, the latter is obtained from the vineyard of the same name in Serralunga d’Alba.
There are two versions of Nizza DOCG, produced with 100% Barbera d’Asti grapes, Cremosina and Generala Riserva. Nizza deserves special mention as it best expresses the potential of the Barbera grape and is produced in a restricted area that includes 18 municipalities around Nizza Monferrato.
The Ruché DOCG San Pietro Realto, a symbolic wine of Monferrato, is a rare native Piedmontese grape variety cultivated in a small area of Monferrato Astigiano around Castagnole and rediscovered in the 1970s by the village’s farmer-priest Don Giacomo Cauda.
These wines go well with elaborate traditional dishes, red meats, game and strong-tasting cheeses.
Arturo
Dedicated to the founder Arturo Bersano, the classic method sparkling wine Arturo is available in Brut, Brut Rosé and Pas Dosè versions.
Vinified exclusively with Pinot Noir grapes, the Pas Dosé is distinguished by the duration of the second fermentation in the bottle and aging on the lees for a minimum of 66 months.
Excellent as an aperitif, they pair well with fish, medium-aged cheeses, and delicate white and red meats.
The reds and whites
Additional Bersano brand red wines, typical of the Langhe and Monferrato, are available for tasting or purchase: Barolo DOCG Nirvasco and Barbaresco Mantico, Dolcetto d’Alba, Barbera d’Asti, Barbera d’Alba and Grignolino.
Among the dry whites, Gavi DOCG and Roero Arneis DOCG, Piemonte DOC Sauvignon and Rosato are worth mentioning.
Among the sweet wines to pair with dessert, perhaps with hazelnut cake or the typical Brut e bun biscuits (ugly but good in Piedmontese dialect), Moscato d’Asti DOC Monteolivo and Bracchetto d’Acqui Castelgaro are available.
Two sparkling wines complete the range: Pinot Spumante Brut and Brachetto d’Acqui DOCG Pallavicini, both vinified according to the Charmat method.
The former is ideal throughout the meal, pairing well with appetizers and fish-based dishes, while the latter is excellent with pastries, accompanying fresh fruit and in the preparation of cocktails and long drinks.

Bersano Museums
The testimony and safeguarding of Piedmont's rural culture
Winery tours include a visit to the Bersano Museums: this experience allows you to retrace the steps of those who lived in the countryside every day, used materials and kept alive traditions born at the dawn of time, but which inspired the technological evolutions available today.
A journey through time capable of telling engaging stories even for the younger generations who take part.
For some time I had been persuading myself that everything the peasants had created to work the land, to live and to hope, was disappearing
Museum of Farming Life
Designed in 1950 and realized in 1961, the Museo delle Contadinerie was expanded by Arturo Bersano throughout his life.
It is a true ethnographic oenological museum and is one of the major Italian museums of this type.
It collects unique pieces and rarities that have allowed it to be included in the list of Unesco protected assets.
Museum of Wine Prints
The collection of wine prints is kept inside the 1970 Art Nouveau building, which was the home of the Bersano family.
Here it is shown how the world of wine can cross different genres: painting, poetry, graphics. Witness to this are unique documents, rare texts, prints, paintings and drawings.
