Visits to the Saliceto castle and its most representative buildings are back.
The visit
The visit to the Castle includes:
- the piano nobile,
- the courtyard,
- the stables,
- the conference room,
- the hall of fireplaces,
- the ticket office room.
The visit also includes:
- the parish church of San Lorenzo, Renaissance in style, with decorative elements referencing the Templars;
- the oratory of Sant’Agostino, now converted into social spaces but still preserving pictorial evidence dating back to at least the late 15th century;
- the chapel of San Martino in the hamlet of Lignera, with its late Gothic frescoes.
To reach the chapel of San Martino, it is necessary to travel a short stretch of road by car (5m).
The history of the castle
The Castle was built as a fortress between the 12th and 13th centuries by the will of the Del Carretto family, and it still stands out today for its imposing trapezoidal layout, reinforced by three corner towers.
Over time, the fief passed from the Bishop of Savona to the Municipality of Asti, until it came, from 1251 to 1532, into the hands of the Marquises Del Carretto. In 1796, Napoleon Bonaparte also established his headquarters here for a period.
Making this place even more precious is a recent discovery: in the niche of the so-called “Hall of Arms”, a 14th-century pictorial cycle has emerged, a testimony that adds a new chapter to the castle’s long history.
