{"id":9410,"date":"2014-10-31T00:02:14","date_gmt":"2014-10-30T23:02:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/langhe.net\/?p=9410"},"modified":"2018-06-19T22:50:33","modified_gmt":"2018-06-19T20:50:33","slug":"3-wine-producers-world-truffle-fair-market-alba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/9410\/3-wine-producers-world-truffle-fair-market-alba\/","title":{"rendered":"Three wine producers at the World Truffle Market in Alba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As everyone knows, the World Truffle Market is held in the Maddalena courtyard during the fair.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the word &#8220;World&#8221; leads one to think of something that\u2019s electronic and futuristic (global markets in times of transnational globalization &#8211; or something along those lines), the Truffle Market is simply a pavilion inhabited by \u2018trifulau\u2019 (truffle hunters) and merchants selling the precious underground fruit from the lands of Alba.<\/p>\n<p>But not everyone knows that the Truffle World Market offers, in addition to truffles, offers <strong>many other local specialties<\/strong>: cheeses, pastries, nuts, meats, cold cuts and wine which form part of the AlbaQualit\u00e0 fair.<\/p>\n<p>Corrado and I went last Sunday and <strong>had a chat<\/strong> with the winemakers who were present at the event. Here&#8217;s what they told us.<\/p>\n<h2>The Mossio\u00a0Brothers<\/h2>\n<div class=\"caption__container content__image aligncenter size-entry_with_sidebar\"><div class=\"ratio\"><div class=\"ratio__content\"><a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSC-3263.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9149 size-entry_with_sidebar\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSC-3263-870x480.jpg\" alt=\"Remo e Valerio Mossio al Mercato mondiale del tartufo\" width=\"870\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div><p class=\"caption__text\">Remo e Valerio Mossio<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mossio is a historic wine cellar. For four generations now they\u2019ve been working with one goal: to achieve perfection, especially with their flagship product, the Dolcetto d&#8217;Alba.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve been present at the Fair &#8220;from the very beginning&#8221;, as Remo tells us and as of this year the Mossio family is presenting a novelty, the <strong>Passito di Dolcetto<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This has been a <strong>great challenge<\/strong> for the company,&#8221; says Remo, because no one has ever produced it before. &#8220;We had <strong>no existing reference<\/strong> to guide us and no one to turn to for advice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After numerous experiments, Valerio finally decided to place it on the market: &#8220;<strong>If we continue trying it there won\u2019t be any left over for bottling.&#8221; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And the result is definitely outstanding: <strong>vaguely tannic<\/strong>, so as attenuate its sweetness, and it\u2019s not at all cloying, as is often the case with this type of wine.<\/p>\n<p>As Remo states, \u00a0the Passito di Dolcetto is ideal for a complete meal; the Dolcetto can accompany the meal from antipasto to dessert.<\/p>\n<p>[av_gallery ids=&#8217;9157,9155,9159&#8242; style=&#8217;thumbnails&#8217; preview_size=&#8217;portfolio&#8217; crop_big_preview_thumbnail=&#8217;avia-gallery-big-crop-thumb&#8217; thumb_size=&#8217;large&#8217; columns=&#8217;3&#8242; imagelink=&#8217;lightbox&#8217; lazyload=&#8217;avia_lazyload&#8217; av_uid=&#8217;av-67gm0y&#8217;]<\/p>\n<p>The other Mossio\u00a0 novelty is <strong>Gamus<\/strong> and this \u00a0too is an experiment: it\u2019s a Dolcetto d&#8217;Alba Superiore <strong>aged for a year in wood.<\/strong> &#8220;In large barrels,&#8221; Remo specifies. &#8220;We have some very old barrique barrels, but for me they\u2019re just very inconvenient \u00a0containers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The name comes from <strong>a stone found during<\/strong> tillage work on the farm, which had the inscription Gamus on it. After storing it at home for a few years, the \u00a0Mossio family decided to have it analyzed \u00a0by the Eusebio Museum of Alba.<\/p>\n<p>The inscription appears to quote the name of a <strong>Roman camp<\/strong> in this area, dating back to Julius Caesar&#8217;s Gallic campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently &#8220;Gamus&#8221; subsequently became a name and was used to define the families who lived in the ancient area of the camp, and the stone, <strong>dated around the sixteenth century<\/strong>, was probably a <strong>tombstone<\/strong> engraved with the family name of the deceased.<\/p>\n<h2>Manera\u00a0Wines<\/h2>\n<div class=\"caption__container content__image aligncenter size-entry_with_sidebar\"><div class=\"ratio\"><div class=\"ratio__content\"><a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSC-3276.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9151 size-entry_with_sidebar\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSC-3276-870x480.jpg\" alt=\"Stand dell'azienda agricola Manera Vini\" width=\"870\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div><p class=\"caption__text\">Stand dell&#8217;azienda agricola Manera Vini<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <strong>Azienda Agricola Manera<\/strong> is, on the other hand, a very <strong>young company<\/strong>: although the production of grapes dates back to a few generations ago, it\u2019s the contemporaries who have started making and bottling their own wines.<\/p>\n<p>While Corrado tastes the Barbaresco, we have a chat with Carlo. &#8220;We\u2019ve almost finished <strong>expanding the cellar<\/strong>,&#8221; he says, &#8220;especially the area where we want to accommodate visitors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then, as Corrado moves on to a <strong>15% vol Barbera (!!!)<\/strong>, Carlo comments on this year\u2019s harvest.<\/p>\n<p>[av_gallery ids=&#8217;9163,9161&#8242; style=&#8217;thumbnails&#8217; preview_size=&#8217;portfolio&#8217; crop_big_preview_thumbnail=&#8217;avia-gallery-big-crop-thumb&#8217; thumb_size=&#8217;large&#8217; columns=&#8217;2&#8242; imagelink=&#8217;lightbox&#8217; lazyload=&#8217;avia_lazyload&#8217; av_uid=&#8217;av-4xfdj6&#8242;]<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an unfortunate vintage , but not all is lost: <strong>there won\u2019t be any full-bodied wines<\/strong> this year and wines with high alcoholic content, but this vintage can also be seen as an opportunity to place <strong>different products<\/strong> on the market.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fresher, simpler, lively colors and fragrances<\/strong>. A good wine must be well-balanced, so the amount of the alcohol cannot be used as an absolute parameter to assess its quality.<\/p>\n<p>Corrado nodded as he finished his glass of Barbera 15 \u00b0 vol.<\/p>\n<h2>Azienda Agricola Demarie<\/h2>\n<div class=\"caption__container content__image aligncenter size-entry_with_sidebar\"><div class=\"ratio\"><div class=\"ratio__content\"><a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSC-3312.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9153 size-entry_with_sidebar\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSC-3312-870x480.jpg\" alt=\"Paolo Demarie nello stand del Mercato Mondiale del Tartufo\" width=\"870\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div><p class=\"caption__text\">Paolo Demarie<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Demarie company brings us back to a <strong>historical reality<\/strong>, found on the other side of the Tanaro river: the company, <strong>based in Vezza d&#8217;Alba with vineyards in all the key areas of the Langhe<\/strong>, offers a very broad line of wines, ranging from Roero to Arneis including Barolo, Barbaresco and Nebbiolo.<\/p>\n<p>Paolo tells us that the stand at the Fair is an <strong>important investment<\/strong>, but it certainly is a great way of getting \u00a0known.<\/p>\n<p>Especially for those who, like him, use the Truffle Market to create an <strong>initial contact with the visitors<\/strong> and eventually get them to come to the wine cellar where he can count on a more peaceful and hospitable ambience and where he can get them to discover his products .<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In particular,&#8221; Paolo says, &#8220;I want them to discover the Roero DOCG.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although we have wines like Barolo and Barbaresco&#8221;, he continues, &#8220;Roero is practically an unknown wine, especially to foreigners, <strong>but it need not envy other more famous DOCG wines<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>[av_gallery ids=&#8217;9167,9165&#8242; style=&#8217;thumbnails&#8217; preview_size=&#8217;portfolio&#8217; crop_big_preview_thumbnail=&#8217;avia-gallery-big-crop-thumb&#8217; thumb_size=&#8217;large&#8217; columns=&#8217;2&#8242; imagelink=&#8217;lightbox&#8217; lazyload=&#8217;avia_lazyload&#8217; av_uid=&#8217;av-2mm702&#8242;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As everyone knows, the World Truffle Market is held in the Maddalena courtyard during the fair.
