An indigenous, noble grape variety, documented as early as the 14th century, probably named for the fog that envelops the clusters in October or for the bloom that covers them.

It loves hills between 200 and 450 meters, the best exposures, the most suitable soils. It’s sensitive, demanding, almost aristocratic: but when it finds its balance, it produces some of the most long-lived and fascinating wines in the world.

Nebbiolo is born and thrives in Piedmont, where it has found its ideal home: ventilated hills, calcareous marls, perfect exposures. It’s a grape that listens to the territory and tells its story with almost moving precision: just move to another hill and you’ll hear it change its voice.

It blooms early, ripens late, requires patience and attention.

That’s why it’s cultivated only in the best areas and represents a small part of Piedmont’s production, but with enormous cultural weight.

And even though many producers around the world have tried to cultivate it, Nebbiolo remains a grape deeply tied to its land: elsewhere it changes, transforms, loses some of its magic.

Not because it’s “difficult,” but because it’s intimate: it needs to feel at home.

What it really tastes like

When it’s young, Nebbiolo is pure energy: a wine made of contrasts, capable of uniting strength and elegance, character and delicacy.

The first encounter is often surprising: the color isn’t very intense, but the sip immediately reveals great personality. The tannins are firm, the acidity is lively and the aromas recall cherry, raspberry, rose and violet, the most recognizable notes of this grape.

Over time it completely changes character. The structure softens, the wine becomes more profound and more complex nuances appear: spices, licorice, undergrowth, leather, tobacco, up to the characteristic tar of great evolutions.

It’s precisely this ability to transform that makes it special: a young Nebbiolo can be direct and immediate, while a great bottle left to rest for years can offer surprising complexity.

It’s a wine that “speaks to you”: the more time you give it, the more it finds something new to tell.

<section class="grid grid--width-80 grid--type-textbox_small grid--mt-md Among terraces, rocks and strong temperature variations, the grape changes expression again.

Valtellina

Here Nebbiolo, known locally as “chiavennasca,” grows on the steep terraces of the Lombard mountains. It becomes leaner and more nervous, with freshness, sapidity and mineral notes in the foreground.

In Valtellina Superiore DOCG it shows elegance and depth, while in Sforzato (or Sfursat) it expresses greater concentration thanks to the drying of the grapes.

Valle d’Aosta

Among the alpine vineyards of Valle d’Aosta, Nebbiolo takes on an even different character: more subtle, fresh and vertical.

In Donnas DOC it produces fine and long-lived wines, where fruit gives way to elegance, tension and mountain aromas.

How to choose it without making mistakes

Choosing a Nebbiolo means understanding which side of the grape you want to encounter. If you want to start without feeling overwhelmed, a young Langhe Nebbiolo is often the best choice: it maintains the grape’s character, but with more evident fruit and more immediate drinkability.

When you’re looking for something more important you can turn to a Nebbiolo d’Alba, or move up to Barbaresco and Barolo, where the grape shows its most complex side: firm tannin, depth, elegance and great aging potential.

The dish can also guide your choice: younger versions pair well with more everyday cuisine, while Barolo, Barbaresco and more evolved Nebbiolo are best with richer and more structured preparations.

Finally, always look at where it comes from and who produces it: territory and producer are two fundamental elements to truly understand what you’re drinking. Cru, mentions and more technical details will come with time.

1

    Drinkability

Choose a young Langhe Nebbiolo: the simplest and most immediate way to approach the grape.

2

    Elegance and character

Roero and Nebbiolo d’Alba are perfect interpretations for discovering new nuances of Nebbiolo.

3

    Special occasions

Barolo and Barbaresco offer complexity and depth. class="wp-block-paragraph">Nebbiolo is the name of the grape, while Barolo and Barbaresco are two DOCG wines produced with Nebbiolo grapes in specific territories of Langhe. They differ in production area, aging and characteristics.

Is Nebbiolo a difficult wine to drink?

No, it depends on the type. A young Langhe Nebbiolo is fresh, aromatic and accessible, perfect for approaching the grape. More important versions express more complexity and evolution.

What’s the ideal temperature to serve Nebbiolo?

Nebbiolo is at its best around 18–20°C, served in a wide glass that allows the aromas to open.

What dishes pair with Nebbiolo?

It’s perfect with many dishes from Piedmontese cuisine: tajarin, roasts, braised meats, game, mushrooms, truffles and aged cheeses. Younger versions can also accompany simpler dishes and aperitifs.

How long can Nebbiolo age?

It depends on the denomination and producer. More immediate Nebbiolo are meant to be drunk young, while Barolo, Barbaresco and some great interpretations can evolve for many years developing more complex aromas.

Is Nebbiolo produced only in Langhe?

No. Langhe is the most famous area, but Nebbiolo is also present in Roero, Upper Piedmont, Valtellina and Valle d’Aosta, where it takes on different characteristics thanks to climate, soils and local traditions.

How much should I spend?

For an excellent Langhe Nebbiolo 15–20 € is enough. For Barolo and Barbaresco… it depends on the winery.

“First time” advice

If it’s your first time with Nebbiolo, choose it young and drink it without overthinking. It’s the simplest way to understand the grape without being intimidated by the tannin. Even better: taste it at the winery, where the producer tells you about the hill, the vineyard, the story behind that glass.

That’s where the wine truly reveals itself — not as an “important” wine, but as a travel companion that speaks clearly.

Discover Nebbiolo in all its forms: aromas, pairings, how to serve it and how to choose it.
