When it comes to wine<\/strong>, the female figure<\/strong> is often never mentioned: there are still many people who think that working in the vineyard<\/strong> is a job for men.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yet there are many women\u00a0<\/strong>whose lives are entwined<\/strong> with this profession.<\/p>\n

For the annual Women’s Day<\/strong> recurrence, we’ve decided to pay homage<\/strong> to some of the women<\/strong> that have marked history<\/strong> and others which, even today, are changing it.<\/p>\n

The Marchioness Giulia Falletti Colbert<\/h2>\n

The illustrious godmother of Barolo, Juliette Victurine Colbert<\/strong>\u00a0(1785 –\u00a01864) initially approached the world of wine when Carlo Tancredi Falletti from Barolo<\/strong> married her.<\/p>\n

The Falletti family were in fact owners of the vast cultivated estates and vineyards<\/strong> and, as from the eighteenth century, began making wine with their own grapes.<\/p>\n

It is said that it was Juliette who suggested drinking an aged<\/strong> red wine<\/strong> produced in the Faletti wine cellars, to the court of Savoy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Carlo Alberto, in fact, was so impressed that he ordered a stock for the entire year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Seeing the great potential of the wine produced in Barolo, the Marchioness dedicated her entire life to it.<\/p>\n

Helped by General Staglieno and the French oenologist Oudart<\/strong>, she launched some rather important\u00a0wine-making innovations<\/strong> which led to the famous Barolo we know today.<\/p>\n

The Bela Rosin<\/h2>\n
\"The<\/div><\/div>


Rosa Vercellana, the Bela Rosin<\/p><\/div>\n

Rosa Vercellana\u00a0<\/strong>(1833 –\u00a01885), was the lover and eventually wife of King Vittorio Emanuele II<\/strong>. The king proclaimed her countess of Mirafiori and Fontanafredda, territories which were respectively part of Turin and Serralunga d\u2019Alba<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0visits to the estate<\/strong> of\u00a0Fontanafredda<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>during which the Countess was well-known for her generosity, still live in the memory<\/strong> of the Langhe inhabitants.<\/p>\n

This is why numerous works were dedicated to her and, many years later, one of the most prestigious wines<\/strong>, a sparkling wine, was named \u201cContessa Rosa<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Countess of Castiglione Tinella<\/h2>\n
\"Virginia<\/div><\/div>


Virginia Oldoini, the Countess of Castiglione Tinella<\/p><\/div>\n

Virginia Oldoini\u00a0<\/strong>(1837 –\u00a01899), one of the most significant female figures in the nineteenth century, used her charm to influence the institutional affairs<\/strong> of the Savoy State.<\/p>\n

She was considered to be a fascinating, beautiful and intelligent woman and even her cousin, the Prime Minister Count Cavour<\/strong>, asked for her help in resolving the delicate peace treaties between Italy and France<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The countess never forgot her origins: Castiglione Tinella<\/a>, land of the Moscato<\/strong>, which remembers her by promoting this wine<\/strong> and the relevant territory<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Tota Virginia Ferrero<\/h2>\n

Entrepreneur of the Barolo wine<\/strong>, Tota Virginia (1865 – 1949), was one of the most representative figures of the nineteenth century.\u00a0She is still remembered today for her personality and determination<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Buyer of grapes and owner of vineyards in Serralunga<\/strong>, she launched an important winery<\/strong> that knew how to enhance the territory’s quality vine varieties.<\/p>\n

The elderly people still remember her with her buggy at the Alba<\/a><\/strong> market bargaining for the best grapes.<\/p>\n

After she died in the 50s, her relatives established the well-known hotel and restaurant – Antico Podere Tota Virginia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Claudia Ferraresi<\/h2>\n
\"Claudia<\/div><\/div>


Claudia Ferraresi<\/p><\/div>\n

A woman of art, culture and wine, she founded the cultural association Ca dj\u2019Amis<\/strong> in La Morra<\/a>; a center aimed at enhancing the territory’s activities<\/strong>\u00a0as from 1975.<\/p>\n

In the 70s, Claudia Ferraresi, the niece of an old Borolo winemaker, took control of the Rocche di Costamagna winery<\/strong> thus becoming, aside from painter<\/strong>, a wine-making<\/strong> entrepreneur.<\/p>\n

Thanks to the fact that she frequented high-profile writers, and her initiatives aimed at promoting the land<\/strong> and its wine and food<\/strong>, she was able to enhance the quality of Barolo.<\/a><\/p>\n

She died in 2014, yet her memories as an artist<\/strong>, literate<\/strong> and a woman in wine<\/strong> continue to live on through her association.<\/p>\n

Maria Teresa Mascarello<\/h2>\n
\"Maria<\/div><\/div>


Maria Teresa Mascarello<\/p><\/div>\n

Owner of the Cantina Mascarello Bartolo<\/strong>, she carries on her father’s legacy of consolidated tradition.<\/p>\n

Maria Teresa<\/strong>\u00a0only uses the grapes she owns and implements traditional wine-making procedures and large barrels for preserving the wine, with the aim of respecting<\/strong>, as much as possible, the identity of the vine variety<\/strong>. These are the solid points of a company philosophy<\/strong> that is not concerned with any form of evolution.<\/p>\n

Maria Teresa, collaborates with cultural associations<\/strong> and keeps in touch with the cultural and literary world. In the 60’s – 80’s she frequented the Cantine Mascarello, and keeps the figure of her father alive.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ornella Costa Correggia<\/h2>\n

Ornella Costa Correggia<\/p><\/div>\n

As a woman from the Roero<\/a> region and wife of the unforgettable Matteo Correggia<\/strong>, she expresses the territory and all the values associated with it: tradition<\/strong>, quality<\/strong> and image<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Matteo Correggia company, present at numerous events, today is among the most prestigious in its sector. A modern winery<\/strong> where technology, innovation and tradition are the pillars of a complete production chain.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a result of her passion,\u00a0Ornella<\/strong>\u00a0received many awards<\/strong> thanks to her high-level viticulture.<\/p>\n

Mariuccia Borio<\/h2>\n

Mariuccia Borio<\/p><\/div>\n

A woman of Barbera<\/a>, she embodies the true spirit of Monferrato<\/strong>\u00a0that is bonded to the lands, vineyards and wines.<\/p>\n

Daughter of winemakers<\/strong>, she took on the lead of the company when she was quite young, and increased the quality and image<\/strong> of the Barbera wine and other Monferrato vine varieties.<\/p>\n

Through her winery, Cascina Castlet<\/strong>, Mariuccia rediscovered local vine varieties<\/strong>, worked with great enologists and experimented both in the vineyard and the winery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Today, she works with several organizations, including the Asti Chamber of Commerce and Onav to enhance the territory’s grapes and wines<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
