It isn\u2019t surprising, at this point, to say that critics have spoken of “symbolic realism<\/strong>” with regard to the narrative processes of The Moon and the Bonfires<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The recurrence of images<\/h2>\n

In fact, the “modest Divine Comedy”, is based on certain specific images<\/strong> that contain a link between the pure image, of symbol and myth, which is central to Pavese’s novel and much of Pavese\u2019s production<\/strong>. All this, then, understood in the light of the recurrence, gives significance to the link in question.<\/p>\n

If we look at \u2018This Business of Living<\/a>\u2019, Pavese\u2019s diary, we can see how the author, long before the drafting of the novel, reflected upon this critical issue:<\/p>\n

L’immagine ti si compone anche (anzi \u00e8 la sola che conti) quando alludi a un’esperienza diversa che giova a finire la figura o la situazione dandole corpo. [\u2026]. Ma siamo chiari: questi tratti, nei quali senza smettere di narrare prendi campo e ricordi-approfondisci l’esperienza totale, oltre che la descrizione fanno simbolo.

Pavese\u2019s thinking<\/h3>\n

By Original: Cesare PaveseDerivative work: GloamingVectorization: Carnby [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons<\/a><\/p><\/div>A year after this thought, he began pondering on it once again, shifting his focus towards a concrete example of the connection<\/strong> between the symbol and image of Dante, representing a technique from which one can draw inspiration<\/strong> and which, most likely, one can see a parental relationship with the “images-story” discourse (also addressed by Pavese in his diary, although with regard to his poetry), as well as the bond that ties the symbol to literature leads him to myth.<\/p>\n

The presence of Dante<\/strong>, therefore, is quite important to the narrative<\/strong>, rhetoric<\/strong> and criticism<\/strong> technique<\/strong> of Pavese, who makes the most of his reflections:<\/p>\n

Non pi\u00f9 simbolo allegorico, ma simbolo immaginoso \u2013 un mezzo di pi\u00f9 per esprimere la \u201cfantasia\u201d (il racconto). On this too, critics have not yet given their actual opinion, but it is very likely that, despite the period of time that separates these reflections from the drafting of the Moon and the Bonfires<\/strong>, the thoughts and reasoning on Dante<\/strong> have had an impact on the emergence of the novel, so much so that the suggestion of scholars is to consider the Dantesque rewriting in light of what is stated in the Business of Living with regards to the Comedy and the importance of Pavese\u2019s image theory<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
