Every harvest<\/strong> is a product of its time. This year, in Langhe, Roero and Monferrato, the harvest tells a story of unseasonable rains<\/strong>, intense sun and unexpected early ripening<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

To understand how this vintage is really going<\/strong>, after our in-depth look at Moscato<\/a>, we wanted to listen directly<\/strong> to those who work in the vineyards every day<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Three voices, three neighboring wine areas<\/strong> but with important differences and peculiarities.<\/p>\n\n

\n

A rich picture of nuances with one common point: adaptation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

We thank for their availability, especially during this period that calling intense is an understatement<\/strong>, Claudio Battaglino from Patrun\u00e8t<\/a> Agricultural Company in Vezza, Luca from Ugo Balocco<\/a> Company and Maurilio Vaira from Tenuta del Barone<\/a>, who told us how they are facing the ongoing harvest<\/strong> and shared their impressions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

The Climate between Early Surges and Summer Tensions<\/h2>\n\n

After a decidedly warm winter<\/strong>, spring brought abundant rainfall<\/strong>, especially in the early phases of the vegetative cycle. <\/p>\n\n

These precipitations, though generous, were in some cases well distributed<\/strong>, favoring plant development without hindering their growth too much. <\/p>\n\n

In other areas, however, they required particular attention to prevent the development of fungal diseases<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

\"Ugo<\/figure>\n\n

The heat wave recorded in the central 15-20 days of August<\/strong> marked a peak that tested the physiological balance of the vines<\/strong>, especially in the most exposed sites. <\/p>\n\n

The temperature variation between day and night in many areas contributed to good aromatic evolution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Another factor that unites Langhe, Roero and Monferrato is the early ripening<\/strong>: everywhere the harvest begins earlier than historical averages<\/strong>, a trend that is now consolidating<\/strong> and that requires a revision of operational timing<\/strong> in the vineyard.<\/p>\n\n

Adaptation Strategies: Precision Work between Leaves and Soil<\/h2>\n\n

As we already saw in our analysis before the beginning of summer<\/a>, vineyard work<\/strong> was once again decisive in preserving grape health and quality<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

The rainy spring<\/strong> required timely interventions<\/strong> and targeted ones: phytosanitary defense required constant attention<\/strong> and ability to adapt to unstable weather conditions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

The differences between areas<\/strong> emerged especially in residual humidity management<\/strong> and in balancing vegetation cover<\/strong> and air circulation in the rows<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

A cross-cutting theme in Langhe, Roero and Monferrato was leaf wall management<\/strong>: the traditional defoliation intervention was in many cases limited, to protect the clusters<\/strong> from sun scorch during the hottest weeks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

At the same time, the greater vegetative density made necessary more careful control of microclimatic conditions within the canopy<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

In some areas of Monferrato, particular attention was also paid to soil management<\/strong>: controlled grass cover and minimal tillage allowed to retain moisture<\/strong> during dry periods and limit erosion<\/strong> during rainier ones.<\/p>\n\n

Careful Harvest, Healthy Grapes: the Season’s Signals<\/h2>\n\n

The harvest opened with white and early grapes already at the peak of their aromatic potential, and gradually extended to red varieties<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

From a health perspective, the grapes are overall in excellent condition, with good ripening levels<\/strong> and well-balanced acidity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

In some areas of Roero<\/strong> and Monferrato<\/strong> there is a very “clean” harvest<\/strong>, the result of careful vineyard work and weather conditions that, except for some exceptions, have remained favorable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Viticulture in Transition: between Adaptation and Vision<\/h2>\n\n

Climate change is a concrete and worrying variable that influences every choice<\/strong> among the rows. <\/p>\n\n

If there’s one point on which Langhe<\/strong>, Roero<\/strong> and Monferrato<\/strong> agree, it’s the need to rethink agricultural work<\/strong> in an adaptive way: from agronomic practices<\/strong> to water resource management, to variety selection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Extreme vintages are no longer exceptions<\/strong>, but trends that repeat with increasing frequency, and viticulture is called to deal with a new normal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Strategies are implemented in different ways depending on the territory’s characteristics but what emerges is an increasingly aware viticulture<\/strong>, that accepts the complexity<\/strong> and instability of the present<\/strong>, but doesn’t give up seeking solutions<\/strong>, also because as more than one producer reminded us, the vineyard’s response, if well managed, is still there.
