With the arrival of June, the rows of Langhe and Roero<\/strong> enter one of the most intense and delicate phases of the year.<\/strong> It is the time when the work of the <\/strong>winemakers<\/a> <\/strong>becomes critical in accompanying the vines<\/strong> toward a promising season.<\/p>\n\n

To tell what happens during this crucial period, we gathered the valuable testimonies<\/strong> of Laurent Miccoli<\/strong>, of the Hilberg Pasquero<\/a> winery in Priocca<\/a>, Roero, and Daniele Marengo<\/strong>, of the Marengo Mauro<\/a> winery in Novello<\/a>, Langhe.<\/p>\n\n

Two different voices, two territories with their own singular peculiarities<\/strong>, to offer a comprehensive look<\/strong> at the work between the rows<\/strong> in this extraordinary corner of Piedmont.<\/p>\n\n

Tidying the vineyard: trellising and shoot thinning<\/h2>\n\n

Vines at this time enter a lush growth phase that requires constant attention<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

The main activities focus on greenery management<\/strong>, a set of operations that are essential<\/strong> to accompany plants to flowering and fruit set in the best possible conditions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

\n

Each intervention is part of a delicate balance, managed day by day, vine by vine<\/strong>. It is during this phase \u2014 still largely invisible to those who will later enjoy the finished wine \u2014 that the foundations for a good harvest are laid. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

Trellising<\/strong> \u2014 the arrangement of shoots along the training wires<\/strong> \u2014 is a manual task<\/strong> that requires care: organizing the canes helps ensure good exposure<\/strong> to light and air, both essential for proper grape cluster development<\/strong> and for reducing humidity<\/strong> among the leaves. <\/p>\n\n

At the same time, shoot thinning<\/strong> takes place: excess shoots are removed<\/strong>, and the best ones are selected \u2014 those that can bear fruit in a balanced and healthy way<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

An interesting aspect is that a light fruit set<\/strong> \u2014 meaning flowering that doesn\u2019t result in overly compact clusters<\/strong> \u2014 can actually be a quality advantage<\/strong>: looser bunches are less susceptible to disease and allow for a greater concentration of aromas.<\/p>\n\n

Trimming and grass care: keeping the vine rows clean and healthy<\/h2>\n\n

Among the activities done at this time is topping<\/strong>, a cutting off of the apical part of the shoots<\/strong>. This technique, when properly dosed, helps to contain growth and focus the plant’s energy on the cluster<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

Not everyone applies it in the same way-some prefer to postpone or avoid it depending on the variety<\/strong> or weather pattern<\/strong>, but it remains a useful intervention to direct vegetative development.<\/p>\n\n

Finally, work is also done on the soil<\/strong>. Managing the grass between the vine rows<\/strong> and beneath the vines<\/strong> is another crucial aspect: the grass is mowed<\/strong> or the soil is mechanically worked<\/strong> to reduce water competition, improve aeration<\/strong>, and lower humidity at ground level. <\/p>\n\n

The essential link between climate and grape quality<\/h2>\n\n

In working between the rows, the weather is never just a side dish: it is a key player<\/strong>, capable of influencing every agronomic choice<\/strong>. This year’s spring brought heavy rainfall<\/strong> especially in April, followed by a month of May<\/strong> with variable temperatures and alternating phases of sun and rain. <\/p>\n\n

These are conditions that require alertness and readiness<\/strong>, but they have also made it possible to restore the soil’s water reserves<\/strong>, which were partially depleted by the winter snow shortage.<\/p>\n\n

As always, the summer will tell the rest of the story, but the careful work done in spring is the first step toward a quality harvest.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

In the Langhe<\/strong>, as well as in the Roero<\/strong>, a promising<\/strong> start to the season can be observed. Weather conditions, while requiring constant monitoring, have not compromised the start of the vintage, which currently offers good prospects<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

Blight: better a step up than a step down<\/h2>\n\n

Grapevine downy mildew, caused by the fungus Plasmopara viticola<\/em>, is one of the main cryptogamic diseases<\/strong> (they reproduce via spores) that can affect vineyards<\/strong>, especially under conditions of high humidity<\/strong> and mild temperatures. <\/p>\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n

The first symptoms occur on the leaves with the appearance of translucent spots<\/strong>, known as \u201coil spots,\u201d which later turn yellowish<\/strong>. In high humidity, a whitish mold develops<\/strong> on the underside of the leaves, consisting of the fruiting of the fungus. <\/p>\n\n

\n

In vintages like this, even one choice can make the difference between a healthy vineyard and a compromised one. Downy mildew does not forgive delays-that requires experience, constant observation and targeted interventions. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

If left unchecked, the infection can spread<\/strong> to the grape clusters, causing browning and necrosis of the berries, ultimately compromising both quality and quantity<\/strong> of the harvest.<\/p>\n\n

Open and active wineries: why June is the perfect time to visit<\/h2>\n\n

June is not only a pivotal month for vineyard work but also one of the most captivating times for those eager to explore the world of wine<\/strong> up close. <\/p>\n\n

The vines are bustling with activity<\/strong>, the air smells fresh and green, and amid their daily work, producers are always happy to welcome<\/strong> those who wish to discover wine<\/strong> right where it begins.<\/p>\n\n
