{"id":269185,"date":"2024-09-27T10:46:14","date_gmt":"2024-09-27T08:46:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/langhe.net\/269185\/vintage-year-2024-chat-producers\/"},"modified":"2024-09-27T12:04:45","modified_gmt":"2024-09-27T10:04:45","slug":"vintage-year-2024-chat-producers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/269185\/vintage-year-2024-chat-producers\/","title":{"rendered":"Harvest 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <strong>grape harvest<\/strong> represents one of the most crucial times for the wine sector, and each year brings with it challenges, opportunities and new scenarios.<\/p>\n\n<p>To better understand how the <strong>2024 grape harvest<\/strong> is unfolding and what the future prospects are, we interviewed some of the producers who are doing the work at this time. <\/p>\n\n<p>We therefore thank <strong>Franco Ariano<\/strong> of <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/business\/cascina-fontanette\/\">Azienda Agricola Cascina Fontanette <\/a>in Santo Stefano Belbo, <strong>Luca<\/strong> of <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/business\/ugo-balocco\/\">Azienda Agricola Ugo Balocco <\/a>, <strong>Alberto <\/strong>of<a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/business\/i-calici\/\">Azienda Agricola I Calici<\/a>, and <strong>Priscilla<\/strong> of <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/business\/bel-colle\/\">Bel Colle<\/a> in Verduno.<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How is the 2024 harvest going so far?<\/h4>\n\n<p><span class=\"uppercase--md\">Franco<\/span> \u2014 It is progressing <strong>very well<\/strong> because it is we have had rainy weather in the spring.<\/p>\n\n<p>We started with <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/vines\/moscato-en\/\">muoscato<\/a>, then we will continue with <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/vines\/dolcetto-en\/\">dolcetto<\/a>, and in the next few weeks we will move forward with whites, then <strong>cortese<\/strong> and <strong>chardonnay<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p><span class=\"uppercase--md\">PRISCILLA<\/span> \u2014 So far we can be satisfied. Compared to last year, the <strong>water reserves<\/strong> have reestablished, we are happy with how it is going because <strong>the grapes are healthy and beautiful<\/strong>, although it has been raining a little too much lately. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape-lg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1314\" height=\"875\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Ugo-Balocco-Vendemmia-1314x875.jpg\" alt=\"Ugo Balocco - The Manual Harvest\" class=\"wp-image-218904\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Manual harvesting<\/em> by <em>Ugo Balocco<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>We started with the <strong>sparkling wine grapes<\/strong>, so pinot noir and chardonnay, then continued with moscato and dolcetto. <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/vines\/nebbiolo-en\/\">Nebbiolo<\/a> is always the last to be picked, both because of variety issues and because of the unprepossessing weather at this time. <\/p>\n\n<p><span class=\"uppercase--md\">alberto<\/span> \u2014 We come from two years of <strong>fearful drought<\/strong>, in which the vines arrived very stressed at harvest, gave us little product, although of very high quality. If that had been the case again this year, we would have risked <strong>losing the plants<\/strong> because they are not used to water stress. <\/p>\n\n<p>Fortunately, <strong>it rained heavily<\/strong> in the spring, which allowed the vines to recover and restart well: the leaves are back to a nice bright green, and in the vineyard we saw grass again.<\/p>\n\n<p>At the moment we have harvested white grapes such as <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/vines\/arneis-en\/\">arneis<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/vines\/favorita-en\/\">favorita<\/a>, dolcetto and, in late September, <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/vines\/barbera-en\/\">barbera<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p><span class=\"uppercase--md\">luca<\/span> &#8211; At the moment very good, compared to the last two years the grapes seem to be of <strong>good quality<\/strong>; now we have finished harvesting the <strong>moscato<\/strong>, we will then move on to <strong>dolcetto<\/strong>, <strong>barbera<\/strong> and <strong>nebbiolo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>We started on September 3 and will continue until the <strong>first decade of October<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Did climatic factors affect this year&#8217;s production?<\/h4>\n\n<p><span class=\"uppercase--md\">Franco<\/span> \u2014 There have been some problems related to <strong>disease<\/strong> but, as I said, having had a lot of rain in the spring and little this summer I can say that <strong>the countryside is beautiful<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape-lg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"875\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Bel-Colle-Vigneti-1400x875.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-217386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Bel-Colle-Vigneti-1400x875.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Bel-Colle-Vigneti-900x563.jpg 900w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Bel-Colle-Vigneti-550x344.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>The Vineyards of Bel Colle<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p><span class=\"uppercase--md\">PRISCILLA<\/span> \u2014 Certainly yes, <strong>it was delayed a little bit<\/strong> but it was just a week, two maximum, especially for the red berry varieties. However, the <strong>temperature fluctuations<\/strong> &#8211; the balance between rain and sunshine &#8211; made it possible to give a <strong>good product<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p>Compared with last year, which had had very high temperature changes, we anticipated that there might be a <strong>lowering of the alcohol content<\/strong>, given the little development of the sugar content.<\/p>\n\n<p><span class=\"uppercase--md\">alberto<\/span> \u2014 The rains created quite a few problems in terms of <strong>fungi<\/strong>-such as downy mildew and powdery mildew, which attack when there is a lot of moisture-and everyone fought them as best they could.<\/p>\n\n<p>The summer was hot, with a few spikes, but not damaging: this &#8220;normal&#8221; weather pattern allowed us to go back in time, to the <strong>harvests of yesteryear<\/strong>, when arneis was harvested in mid-September, barbera in late September and nebbiolo in early October.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape-lg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"875\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/I-calici-Azienda-Agricola-alberto_troia_01-1400x875.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-264724\" srcset=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/I-calici-Azienda-Agricola-alberto_troia_01-1400x875.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/I-calici-Azienda-Agricola-alberto_troia_01-900x563.jpg 900w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/I-calici-Azienda-Agricola-alberto_troia_01-550x344.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Alberto of I Calici at work<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>This is precisely why we thought it was nice to reintroduce the concept of <strong>traditional crushing<\/strong>: a couple of years ago I was in the winery <strong>tasting my wines from the barrels<\/strong>, and I imagined that sitting next to me were still my father and grandfather telling me not to forget how they made their wines.<\/p>\n\n<p>That viticulture and oenology, I experienced it as a child in the <strong>1960s\/70s<\/strong> watching my father <strong>crush grapes with his feet<\/strong> still for work requirements (and not to give away experiences): poetry was lacking then and there was a tremendous effort. This is why I decided to create a Barbera that follows a strictly traditional production process. <\/p>\n\n<p><span class=\"uppercase--md\">Luca<\/span> \u2014 The spring <strong>rains<\/strong> helped a lot and allowed the grapes to <strong>ripen properly<\/strong>; the rain this time of year, on the other hand, creates quite a few <strong>difficulties for us in harvesting<\/strong>, but we are holding on.<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quality and quantity: how does this year&#8217;s production look?<\/h4>\n\n<p><span class=\"uppercase--md\">Franco<\/span> \u2014 Considering the grapes we have already harvested, in terms of quantity we have found a <strong>good balance<\/strong>, neither too much nor too little. Last year it was very low. <\/p>\n\n<p>Nebbiolo and barbera will be harvested later in October, but the forecast looks <strong>very rosy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p><span class=\"uppercase--md\">PRISCILLA<\/span> \u2014 Yes, the outlook is <strong>good<\/strong>, we don&#8217;t have any quantity problems. However, we, being purely related to what is the production of <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/wines\/docg-barolo\/\">Barolo<\/a>, we have quantities that are set by specification and so we fit in perfectly.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape-lg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"875\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/vendemmia-fontanette-eventi-1400x875.jpg\" alt=\"grape harvest fontanette - events\" class=\"wp-image-227691\" srcset=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/vendemmia-fontanette-eventi-1400x875.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/vendemmia-fontanette-eventi-900x563.jpg 900w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/vendemmia-fontanette-eventi-550x344.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p><span class=\"uppercase--md\">alberto<\/span> \u2014 We arrived at the vineyard with an abundant and good-quality (though not entirely excellent) <strong>product<\/strong>, the plants <strong>vegetated<\/strong> well and, above all, did not suffer. <\/p>\n\n<p>Wines of this vintage will have an <strong>alcohol content<\/strong> about one degree to one and a half degrees lower than the average.<\/p>\n\n<p><span class=\"uppercase--md\">luca<\/span> \u2014 <strong>Not exaggerated quantities<\/strong>, but production was good compared to recent years.<\/p>\n\n<p>The vines required a lot of work because of excess water, so <strong>more care<\/strong> and <strong>disease treatments<\/strong>, but in the end it was worth it, for sure.<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are your expectations for the marketing of this vintage?<\/h4>\n\n<p><span class=\"uppercase--md\">Franco<\/span> \u2014 In general, the <strong>market<\/strong> is a bit contracted, however, thanks to initiatives such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/etags\/educational-grape-harvest\/\">Festival and Educational Harvest<\/a> we explain to adults and children how the <strong>world of wine<\/strong> works, what harvesting is and <strong>how we work in the winery<\/strong>, so we do outreach in the hope that something will be stirred up.<\/p>\n\n<p><span class=\"uppercase--md\">PRISCILLA<\/span> \u2014 Let&#8217;s think positive, it depends from appellation to appellation: for the <strong>white berry wines<\/strong> there will be a <strong>higher gear<\/strong>, but there will also be nice evaluations about the <strong>reds<\/strong>, especially the aging ones, because in my opinion they will be <strong>slightly finer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p><span class=\"uppercase--md\">alberto<\/span> \u2014 The problem will not be so much with the quality that will come to the winery, because it will still be good, but with the wine <strong>inventories<\/strong> and <strong>market crises<\/strong> that are there to date, especially for the foreign market.<\/p>\n\n<p><span class=\"uppercase--md\">luca<\/span> \u2014 There are <strong>quite a few difficulties<\/strong> in the market at the moment, worldwide, but it is not up to us. Of course, <strong>when the product is good it is always rewarded<\/strong> despite the slowdown in the industry. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Interview with winemakers on the
