La Cricca dij Mes-ci\u00e0 is a lively folk music group<\/strong> dedicated to reinterpreting traditional Piedmontese songs<\/strong>, enriched with a fast-paced<\/strong>, danceable<\/strong> rhythm . <\/p>\n\n

Founded in 2013, La Cricca began by rearranging ancient folk songs <\/strong>in the footsteps of storytellers, and then evolved and devoted itself to composing original songs<\/strong> as well. <\/p>\n\n

We liked the idea of exploring the topic of cultural repurposing<\/strong>, tradition in the present and future, in a pleasant chat <\/strong>with Daniele “Pera” Ronco, frontman of the group. <\/p>\n\n

Origins and passion: “How did you start playing traditional folk music from Piedmont and what drew you to this genre? How did the group come into being?<\/h4>\n\n

Daniele<\/span> \u2014 La Cricca was born as a joke<\/strong> by a group of friends. Each came with different artistic experiences<\/strong>, some from theater, some from other musical groups. We met to “play two” at occasions such as lunches and dinners with friends<\/strong> until we said, “Shall we go to the Cant’e j’euv<\/a> and have a little shindig?”.<\/p>\n\n

Each song is a story. We make music of the people for the people<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

Given the enthusiastic response from the audience, we decided to structure ourselves and revisit traditional songs in a modern way<\/strong>. Later we started writing our own songs<\/strong> that embrace the epics of the past<\/strong> with our current values. <\/p>\n\n

We consider ourselves an agricultural group<\/strong> by telling the story of the land in its defense<\/strong>: the preservation of the environment in which we live, farming as toil, but also as an opportunity to be together.<\/p>\n\n

Why is it important to keep the traditional music of the Piedmont alive in contemporary culture?<\/h4>\n\n

Daniele<\/span> \u2014 In our small way we try to tell a story to everyone,<\/strong> even those who do not understand Piedmontese. I don’t see dialect as a limitation<\/strong>, on the contrary, often there are contexts, for example when we play for a foreign audience, where the energy<\/strong>, the desire to share<\/strong> and to dance is very strong. <\/p>\n\n

It is about transferring rituals, a tradition of an area<\/strong> where music has incredible power<\/strong> because it makes everything easier, immediate. <\/p>\n\n

What have been your most significant experiences? Can you tell us about your trip to Argentina?<\/h4>\n\n

Daniele<\/span> \u2014 In 2019, in collaboration with the Agemaso association of Monticello, we traveled to Argentina to explore and share Piedmontese culture<\/strong> with local communities <\/strong>in the provinces of Santa Fe, C\u00f3rdoba and Entre R\u00edos. <\/p>\n\n

Those who leave, care more about their origins than those who remain. Often those who live here do not have the attachment to tradition that people who live thousands of miles away have<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

We met people with a very close umbilical cord <\/strong>to Piedmont and a strong sense of belonging<\/strong> despite several generations<\/strong> having passed. The older people know Piedmontese; I still speak and chat via WhatsApp with some of them in dialect. <\/p>\n\n

We met a ton of people, who welcomed us with incredible warmth<\/strong>, the kind that is typical of South America. <\/p>\n\n

The trip was immortalized in a docufilm, which chronicles this fascinating experience of cultural and musical exchange<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n
