The masche stories<\/a>, with their mix of realism<\/strong> and superstition<\/strong>, are a vivid example of how folklore<\/strong> is intertwined with everyday life<\/strong>, living manifestations of the popular imagination<\/strong> of the Langhe and Piedmont.<\/p>\n\n

Witches, sorceresses, restless spirits<\/a> with supernatural powers<\/strong>, endowed with the amazing ability to mutate into animal creatures<\/strong>, exert vengeance for an injustice <\/strong>suffered or be the architects of misfortune<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

To write this article, I consulted some of the most authoritative titles on the subject<\/strong>: I particularly recommend Masche<\/em> by Donato Bosca <\/strong>and Bruno Murialdo<\/strong>, if you are interested in learning more about the subject. <\/p>\n\n

Spells of words: the “vija” and stories of the Masche<\/h2>\n\n

In an era shrouded in the charm of the past<\/strong>, vigils, or “vij\u00e0”, were magical stages<\/strong> where storytellers <\/strong>became heroes of storytelling, weavers of tales that enchanted and united multiple generations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

“Vigils” were evenings when the community gathered<\/strong>, often during colder seasons or on holidays, occasions to strengthen community ties<\/strong>, pass on local culture<\/strong> and traditions<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

As the shadows of night grew thicker, the atmosphere became charged withelectrifying suspense<\/strong>. It was the highlight of the evening<\/strong>: the beginning of the tales of mystery and thrill, related to the enigmatic figures<\/strong> of the Masche.<\/p>\n\n

In this context, the narrator was transformed into an eyewitness<\/strong>, a traveler of unknown worlds, making each tale extraordinarily vivid and tangible. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

His words, steeped in authenticity and mystery<\/strong>, were not just stories, but open windows <\/strong>into a universe of <\/strong>culture<\/a>, beliefs and legends, capable of vibrating the line between reality and fantasy.<\/p>\n\n

First mentioned in the Edict of Rotari. <\/h3>\n\n

The mention of the term “masca” in the 643 Edict of Rotari<\/strong> represents a significant point in the history of law<\/strong> and folk beliefs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

The “masca” is mentioned with the meaning of witch<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

This reference in the edict not only emphasizes the importance of local mythology<\/strong> and magic in society<\/strong>, but also their influence on the formal law<\/strong> of the time. <\/p>\n\n

The command book<\/h2>\n\n

The “Command Books” are shrouded in a veil of mystery<\/strong> and considered both a privilege <\/strong>and a burden<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

Those in possession of them cannot get rid of them easily<\/strong>, as the only way to detach from them is to transfer them to another person<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

The latter, in turn, is destined to turn into a masca<\/strong>, thus perpetuating the cycle of power and responsibility associated with these enigmatic tomes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Magical <\/strong>texts containing a variety of formulas and incantations<\/strong>, rites and ceremonies, used to summon<\/strong> both benevolent and malevolent spirits <\/strong>and believed to have been written by the devil himself<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Safeguarding customs and rituals<\/h2>\n\n

Throughout Piedmont there were various practices<\/strong> to protect themselves from malignancies attributed to the masche<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

For example, many believed that during the celebration of Mass<\/strong>, the priest could recognize a masca <\/strong>among the faithful.<\/p>\n\n

Some spread salt around<\/strong>, special care was taken not to expose children’s clothes outdoors<\/strong>, fearing that the masks could damage them and cause malformations<\/strong> in the little ones.<\/p>\n\n

Others protected their homes<\/strong> with hemp threads, spun specifically by young girls<\/strong> who had never previously employed a spindle.<\/p>\n\n

The story of Micillina: the masca of Pocapaglia<\/h2>\n\n

That of the masca Micilina, is certainly among the best known and most told stories of the area.<\/p>\n\n

Micillina was a woman from Barolo<\/strong> who, after marrying a farmer, moved to Pocapaglia. Her unusual appearance<\/strong> and behavior made her suspect in the eyes of the community<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Her personal affairs <\/strong>are intertwined with mysterious events<\/strong>: she is accused of causing physical deformities and other accidents<\/strong>, such as a little girl’s hump. <\/p>\n\n

The situation worsens when her husband begins to mistreat her because of the rumors, leading Mycilina to seek refuge in the woods<\/strong>, where she is said to have made a pact with the devil<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

The growing fear <\/strong>and accusations against her culminate in theintervention of the Inquisition Tribunal <\/strong>where she is tried, and under torture, admits to various crimes <\/strong>only to be condemned and burned on the Bric d’la Masca <\/strong>in Pocapaglia.<\/p>\n\n

Rediscovering the past through researching oral histories<\/h2>\n\n

The story of Mycilina, like so many others, mixes fact and legend<\/strong>, symbolizing the influence of folk beliefs<\/strong> and superstition in local culture<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

Research on these tales, as those who have studied and continue to study their historical, sociological <\/strong>and anthropological elements rightly state, must include historical sources<\/strong> to avoid a merely folkloric interpretation<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

Today, unfortunately, storytellers no longer exist<\/strong>; the elders with their compelling tales<\/strong>, indispensable guardians of an immortal legacy<\/strong>, become the custodians of time<\/strong>.
