{"id":236201,"date":"2023-08-25T10:06:19","date_gmt":"2023-08-25T08:06:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/langhe.net\/236201\/what-are-indigenous-grape-varieties-langhe-roero\/"},"modified":"2023-08-25T11:27:04","modified_gmt":"2023-08-25T09:27:04","slug":"what-are-indigenous-grape-varieties-langhe-roero","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/236201\/what-are-indigenous-grape-varieties-langhe-roero\/","title":{"rendered":"The native grape varieties of Langhe and Roero"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <strong>Langhe<\/strong> and <strong>Roero<\/strong>, renowned for their delicious wines, derive part of their appeal from the wealth of <strong>native grape varieties<\/strong> that thrive in their soils.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/magazine-en\/wines-vines\/\">grape varieties<\/a> are an integral part of our territory&#8217;s <strong>winemaking heritage<\/strong> and, with their unique character, contribute to the production of unforgettable wines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s start with the <strong>reds <\/strong>and then continue with the <strong>whites<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nebbiolo, the noble grape variety<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/vines\/nebbiolo-en\/\">Nebbiolo<\/a>, often called the <strong>&#8220;king of grape varieties<\/strong>,&#8221; is the <strong>iconic variety of<\/strong> the Langhe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It gives rise to the famous <strong>Barolo <\/strong>and <strong>Barbaresco<\/strong>, wines known as the finest and longest-lived and which have made this area&#8217;s name great.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-landscape-lg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"875\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/uva_nebbiolo-1400x875.jpeg\" alt=\"Nebbiolo grapes\" class=\"wp-image-236193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/uva_nebbiolo-1400x875.jpeg 1400w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/uva_nebbiolo-900x563.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/uva_nebbiolo-550x344.jpeg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This grape variety most likely owes its name to the <strong>mist <\/strong>that emerges at the time it is generally harvested, in October, or to the patina -the <strong>bloom- that <\/strong> forms on the berry, as if it were a light autumn haze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wines made from nebbiolo are distinguished by a <strong>complex flavor profile<\/strong> that combines floral, fruity and spicy notes. In youth, they can be tannic, but with aging they develop extraordinary elegance and depth. <strong>Noblesse oblige.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Barbera, the gustatory balance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/vines\/barbera-en\/\">barbera<\/a><\/strong> (which is declined to the feminine when it comes to wine, however) is another native grape widely grown in the Langhe, so <strong>renowned<\/strong> that it hardly needs any introduction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape-lg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"875\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/res_vitigno_barbera-1400x875.jpg\" alt=\"Barbera grape variety\" class=\"wp-image-216816\" srcset=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/res_vitigno_barbera-1400x875.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/res_vitigno_barbera-900x563.jpg 900w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/res_vitigno_barbera-550x344.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote quote--pull-right quote--is-small typography__quote\"><p>\u201cAi nostri dolor insieme brindiam \/ Col tuo bicchiere di Barbera \/ Col mio bicchiere di Champagne\u201d <\/p><p><\/p><cite class=\"quote__author uppercase--md\"><strong>GIORGIO GABER<\/strong><\/cite><span class=\"quote__book serif--sm\">Barbera e Champagne<\/span><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It has a <strong>very ancient origin<\/strong>, and its main characteristic is its high level of <strong>natural acidity<\/strong>, which persists even when fully ripe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resulting wines are prized for their <strong>balance <\/strong>between <strong>acidic freshness<\/strong> and <strong>tannic structure<\/strong>, and this balance makes them extremely versatile, suitable both for young consumption and after a period of aging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The flavor profiles of Barbera wines range from notes of <strong>black<\/strong> and <strong>red <\/strong>fruits to slightly spicy nuances. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What can I say&#8230; <strong>Gaber docet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dolcetto: the &#8220;rusti-chic&#8221; grape variety.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/vines\/dolcetto-en\/\">Dolcetto<\/a> is another characteristic grape of the Langhe, owing its <strong>name <\/strong>to the <strong>Piedmontese dialect &#8220;ducet&#8221;<\/strong> for the <strong>grape<\/strong>&#8216;s predisposition to be <strong>sweeter<\/strong>, an element that does not occur in wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vine can be grown relatively easily, but not as easy as its <strong>vinification<\/strong>, which must be <strong>brief<\/strong> to avoid the risk of obtaining a wine with too much tannicity and too intense a color, since the skins are rich in dark pigments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resulting wine has a <strong>ruby-purple color<\/strong>, a <strong>fruity<\/strong> profile, reminiscent of black cherries, and a dry, <strong>pleasantly bitter<\/strong> taste. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape-lg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/dolcetto-1400x700.jpg\" alt=\"treat - events\" class=\"wp-image-177501\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike the powerful and long-lived wines produced from nebbiolo, <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/wines\/dolcetto-dalba-doc\/\">Dolcetto<\/a> is known for its <strong>freshness<\/strong> and <strong>drinkability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These wines are perfectly suited for<strong> drinking young<\/strong>, offering pleasant sensations of softness and fresh fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, <strong>Dolcetto<\/strong> it is!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pelaverga, the rediscovered friend of Verduno<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the <strong>oldest cultivars<\/strong>,<strong> <\/strong>with a distinctive taste and history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/vines\/pelaverga-en\/\">pelaverga<\/a> piccolo vine -not to be confused with the grosso vine, typical of the Saluzzo area- is a <strong>rarity <\/strong>that is said to have come to Verduno thanks to Blessed Sebastiano Valfr\u00e8 in the 18th century. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape-md\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"867\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/burlotto-cascina-massara-uva-867x563.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-136323\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Its <strong>rediscovery <\/strong>in the 1970s gave this particular wine new luster when it was decided to <strong>vinify it on its own<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its production area is restricted to the municipality of <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/town\/verduno-piedmont\/\">Verduno<\/a> and also includes parts of the municipalities of Roddi and La Morra. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This precious grape variety produces a <strong>wine with intense, spicy aromas<\/strong>, and the low acidity makes it a perfect product for drinking in summer. A true<strong> oenological gem<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nascetta, the rebirth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/10197\/nascetta-story-film-white-grape\/\">Nascetta<\/a>, anascetta or nas-c\u00ebtta are just some of the ways to identify this<strong>&#8220;surviving<\/strong>&#8221; grape variety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Already known in 1877, in<strong> Giuseppe di Rovasenda<\/strong>&#8216;s book, <em>Saggio di un ampelografia universale<\/em>, as a &#8220;most delicate grape and exquisite wine,&#8221; this long neglected variety has recently regained attention and respect thanks to the efforts of some local producers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-landscape-md\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/nascetta_uva-900x563.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-235967\" srcset=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/nascetta_uva-900x563.jpg 900w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/nascetta_uva-550x344.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nascetta is distinguished by its ability to produce <strong>wines of great character<\/strong> and <strong>complexity<\/strong>, expressing the region&#8217;s unique terroir. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its production is concentrated in the communes of La Morra, Novello, Santo Stefano Belbo, Serralunga d&#8217;Alba, Barolo, Trezzo Tinella, Dogliani, Carr\u00f9 and Castiglione Falletto, proving in this sense a true <strong>territorial expression<\/strong>. A treasure to be preserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Arneis, the golden essence of Roero <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Roero<\/strong> immediately recalls <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/vines\/arneis-en\/\">arneis<\/a>: an inescapable mental and physical combination that tells the story of a place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>sandy composition<\/strong> of the Roero has allowed the soil to be an ideal cradle for the Arneis grape variety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its name in dialect means &#8220;<strong>rebellious<\/strong>&#8221; or &#8220;difficult&#8221; (although some theories trace it back to &#8220;arnese&#8221;, whose meaning is tool) and the earliest information regarding this vine dates as far back as the <strong>15th century<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"690\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/roero-arneis-01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-134985\" srcset=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/roero-arneis-01.jpg 690w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/roero-arneis-01-550x344.jpg 550w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/roero-arneis-01-250x156.jpg 250w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/roero-arneis-01-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/roero-arneis-01-450x281.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A curious note is that <strong>arneis vines<\/strong> were <strong>placed side by side <\/strong>with <strong>nebbiolo<\/strong> vines (hence also the nickname &#8220;<strong>white nebbiolo<\/strong>&#8220;), a variety considered more valuable by farmers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fragrant <\/strong>and <strong>sweet<\/strong> white grape <strong>clusters <\/strong>were more <strong>attacked by insects<\/strong> <strong>and<\/strong> <strong>birds <\/strong>, which favored the development of nebbiolo grapes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It suffered a setback in the 1960s due to <strong>rural depopulation<\/strong>, but its cultivation picked up in the 1980s, becoming one of the <strong>most renowned<\/strong> white wines. <strong>Rebel <\/strong>for a<strong> just cause<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Moscato, an enchantment of the senses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/vines\/moscato-en\/\">Moscato<\/a> is one of the <strong>most representative grape varieties of the lower Piedmont region<\/strong>, despite the fact that it is not native and is grown throughout Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>naturally aromatic<\/strong><strong>grape<\/strong> of extraordinary versatility, capable of creating wines of such lofty names as Asti Spumante and Moscato d&#8217;Asti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-landscape-lg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1333\" height=\"875\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Marco-Capra-Grappolo-Moscato-1333x875.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-199246\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Its cultivation is not as easy as it may seem, let alone its rapid winemaking, but the result is always of great elegance and never predictable, thanks to the <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/233143\/moscato-dasti-la-production\/\">technique of skillful producers<\/a> and impeccable raw material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Class<\/strong> is not water, but<strong> Moscato<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To conclude<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of these vines makes us realize that although the world continues to evolve, there is a <strong>timeless beauty <\/strong>that is cared for and preserved by skilled hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The indigenous grape varieties of the Langhe and Roero represent a real, well-defined and deep-rooted <strong>identity window<\/strong>, as only the roots of a vine can be, naturally intertwined with the work of man, the climate, and the land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sources used<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jancis Robinson, <em>Guida ai vitigni del mondo<\/em>, Slow Food Editore<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Andrea Zanfi, <em>L&#8217;Italia del vino<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Luca Gardini, Pierluigi Gorgoni, Andrea Grignaffini, Marco Pozzali, <em>Enciclopedia del vino<\/em>, Dalai Editore<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Langhe and Roero, derive part of their appeal from the wealth of native grape varieties that thrive in their soils.
