You grab your oil lamp (who doesn&#8217;t always keep one handy?) and<strong> rush down the stairs<\/strong>, tripping at least twice over the pants you forgot to button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once outside the doorway, you hear a <strong>chorus of voices<\/strong> coming from the darkness outside the lantern&#8217;s circle of light as the dog growls nervously between your legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The words of the song say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<table style=\"width: 65%\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"10\" cellpadding=\"10\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Suma departed from our house<br \/>ca i-era &#8216;n prima s\u00e8ira<br \/>per amnive a salut\u00e9<br \/>deve\u00e9 la buhna s\u00e8ira<\/td>\n<td>We started from our home<br \/>that it was the first night<br \/>to come and say hello<br \/>And say good evening.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n<p>Then a figure dressed as a friar emerges from the shadows, almost ghostly in the pale moonlight, and you already imagine that the &#8220;good evening&#8221; of the song is about to become a<strong>&#8220;good<\/strong> <strong>night<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Eternal<\/strong> ones though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But don&#8217;t despair! To avoid eternal damnation, all you have to do is go back into the house and <strong>bring out some eggs<\/strong>, because you&#8217;ve probably stumbled upon one of the oldest and most &#8220;langarole&#8221; of langarole traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you look closely in fact, <strong>the fratucin<\/strong> (the little brother) is holding a cavagnin (a basket) already half full, and then <strong>he is not really a friar<\/strong>, he is the guy you meet every day at the village bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And you&#8217;ll see that once a dozen eggs have been thrown, <strong>the<\/strong> <strong>choir<\/strong> you previously heard singing will also emerge from the shadows: mainly <strong>composed of<\/strong> <strong>young people<\/strong>, it will probably be coming to claim a few bottles of wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Good night will probably be given to you by<strong> a couple of drinks<\/strong> too many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(<strong>WARNING<\/strong>: the modern-day Cant\u00e8 j&#8217;Euv party <strong>is no longer celebrated in this way<\/strong>, so if one night, from the shadows of the farmyard of your isolated farmstead, you see a friar emerge accompanied by a choir hidden by darkness, it is very likely that <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/tag\/masche-witches\/\">Are Masche<\/a> for real, so <strong>I strongly advise you to shut yourself up in the house<\/strong>, take the crucifix and <strong>stick<\/strong> <strong>with<\/strong> the <strong>rosary<\/strong>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Celebration Without (Too Much) Mythology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it had some <strong>very<\/strong> <strong>deep<\/strong> <strong>historical<\/strong> <strong>roots<\/strong> (the egg is in fact a symbol of fertility and the occasion fell in spring, the time when the earth came back to life), the Eggs Quest was a festival deprived by <strong>mythological<\/strong> or <strong>spiritual\/religious<\/strong> <strong>connotations<\/strong>, unlike many other local traditions, such as Cant\u00e8 Magg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One curious aspect of it was certainly that of the <strong>redeployment<\/strong> <strong>of<\/strong> <strong>income<\/strong>: questors, almost always people of little means, went to quest eggs in the richest and thriving <strong>farmhouses<\/strong>: in fact, the eggs thus collected were usually used in the following days to make omelets for the &#8220;merendina&#8221; (late afternoon snack), the lunch in the meadows on Easter Monday usually attended by the whole community, or, in some cases, to raise money to finance the conscripts&#8217; party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Young people would go out in the evening and, accompanied by a wide variety of musical instruments, wander from farmstead to farmstead, stopping in farmyards <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cantejeuv.com\/testi_canzoni.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to sing and ask for gifts of eggs<\/a>, a commodity of note at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Songs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Cantar-le-uova1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"795\" height=\"581\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Cantar-le-uova1.jpg\" alt=\"Sing-the-eggs\" class=\"wp-image-4806\" srcset=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Cantar-le-uova1.jpg 795w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Cantar-le-uova1-250x183.jpg 250w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Cantar-le-uova1-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Cantar-le-uova1-768x561.jpg 768w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Cantar-le-uova1-450x328.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 795px) 100vw, 795px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the Vecchio Piemonte website you can read an interesting consideration about the <strong>songs<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote quote--is-small accent\"><p>The song was therefore for personal use, had no spiritual overtones or even origins in pagan mythology. It was a chant that presupposed a common gastronomic interest, and furthermore had a connotation of income redistribution.<\/p><cite class=\"quote__author uppercase--md\">Vecchio Piemonte<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Without special costumes and with very often improvised musical instruments, the boys, in fact made it immediately clear what they had come for;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<table style=\"width: 80%\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"10\" cellpadding=\"10\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Dene d&#8217;euv, dene d&#8217;euv<br \/>of your galinas<br \/>your ausin a l&#8217;an ben dic<br \/>That the evi the gorbe pine<\/td>\n<td>Give us eggs, give us eggs<br \/>Of your chickens<br \/>Your neighbors have told us well.<br \/>That you have baskets full of them<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Dene d&#8217;euv, deen d&#8217;euv<br \/>dela galinha rusa<br \/>your ausin a l&#8217;an ben dic<br \/>That tutu u di ca pusa<\/td>\n<td>Give us eggs, give us eggs<br \/>but of the red hen<br \/>Your neighbors have told us well.<br \/>Which has been brooding all day<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>O dene, dene d&#8217;j oeuv<br \/>ma d&#8217;la galinha bianca,<br \/>your ausin an diso<br \/>That chila l&#8217;\u00e9 never tired<\/td>\n<td>Or give us, give us eggs<br \/>but of the white hen<br \/>that your neighbors say.<br \/>who is never tired<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>.O se voli denr di euv<br \/>de la galinha n\u00e8ira<br \/>i-is pas\u00e0ie Carlev\u00e8<br \/>sum\u00e0 la primav\u00e8ira<\/td>\n<td>Or if you want to give us eggs<br \/>of the black hen<br \/>Carnival has passed<br \/>and it&#8217;s springtime<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n<p>These were then accompanied by &#8220;<strong>personalized<\/strong>&#8221; <strong>stanzas<\/strong>, that is, tailor-made for those who were meant to hear them: jokes and good-luck mottos about <strong>daughters<\/strong> to be married, <strong>widowers<\/strong>, and ladies left <strong>spinsters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a few songs, <strong>the<\/strong> <strong>hostess<\/strong> would come down and <strong>usually<\/strong> <strong>agree <\/strong>to grant the much-requested gift, and the young people would leave singing stanzas of thanksgiving. In wealthier farmsteads, many times questors were <strong>invited<\/strong> <strong>into the<\/strong> <strong>house<\/strong>, where they could enjoy some dishes prepared especially for the Cantar le Uova occasion, and drink a few glasses (or bottles) of wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the eggs<strong> were not granted<\/strong>, however, the questors would leave, casting <strong>curses-almost<\/strong> always, again, on the daughters to be married who would be left to take the mold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Meanings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the egg collection, the occasion was also and above all the way <strong>the village came together<\/strong>, finally outdoors, <strong>after the long winter<\/strong> spent with vigils in the stables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A  <strong>moment<\/strong> <strong>by<\/strong> <strong>sharing<\/strong>, in which the rebirth of nature with spring was accompanied by the rebirth of social life: the Cant\u00e8 j&#8217;Euv was in fact an opportunity for boys to <strong>court girls<\/strong> (the mistress&#8217; daughters), and it was not uncommon that <strong>weddings<\/strong> were combined precisely because of this festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Recovery of Tradition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite its <strong>deep<\/strong> <strong>rootedness<\/strong> and its many facets of meaning, Cant\u00e8 j&#8217;Euv had all <strong>but<\/strong> <strong>disappeared<\/strong> by the late 1950s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/cantar-le-uova.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/cantar-le-uova.jpg\" alt=\"cantar-le-uova\" class=\"wp-image-7569\" srcset=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/cantar-le-uova.jpg 640w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/cantar-le-uova-250x141.jpg 250w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/cantar-le-uova-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/cantar-le-uova-450x253.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It was not until the early 1970s that <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/1164\/antonio-adriano\/\">Antonio Adriano<\/a>, had the intuition to try to <strong>bring it back<\/strong> <strong>to<\/strong> <strong>life<\/strong>, in Magliano Alfieri and neighboring towns. At the very same time, in Prunetto, a small village in Alta Langa, &#8220;Brun,&#8221; the leader of the musical group &#8220;Brav&#8217;Om,&#8221; was making the same attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the experiment of turning Cant\u00e8 j&#8217;Euv into a major international folk festival, attempted by Carlin Petrini in the 1980s, the <strong>tradition<\/strong> <strong>survives<\/strong> <strong>today<\/strong> in small villages, organized by pro-loco and local groups, and even today it also maintains a<strong> marked solidarity vocation<\/strong>, as usually the proceeds (if any) from organizing the festival are used to meet the needs of the local community, or donated to humanitarian projects abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/uova1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/uova1.jpg\" alt=\"eggs1\" class=\"wp-image-7567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/uova1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/uova1-250x188.jpg 250w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/uova1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/uova1-450x337.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine yourself in one of those old farmhouses, made of stone, with wooden floors, crutin and a barn, full of creaks and without streetlights to light the sapel (the road) out front.
