We have not gone that far; it would take a long time to do serious research<\/strong> and unearth even those that are more hidden<\/strong> or have been lost<\/strong> over the years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have made a selection of the most characteristic<\/strong> and well-known of those that have managed to maintain their identity <\/strong>over time and that today represent significant and indispensable opportunities <\/strong>to discover part of<\/strong> Piedmontese folklore<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fiera del Peperone (Pepper Fair) in Carmagnola<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes place in September<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The fair attracts visitors from all over Italy and abroad.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

This festival celebrates the bell pepper of Carmagnola<\/a><\/strong>, a typical excellence of the area. During the fair, the streets of the historic center <\/strong>are filled with colorful stalls<\/strong> offering a variety of products <\/strong>made from the star vegetable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also performances<\/strong>, concerts, cooking demonstrations<\/strong>, contests and lectures to promote knowledge <\/strong>and the importance of preserving local bell pepper varieties<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

September in Asti: Palio, Festival delle Sagre (Festival of Festivals) and Douja D’or<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The city of Asti <\/strong>the month of September offers three must-see events<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Palio is an exciting <\/strong>horse race <\/strong>that dates back to the 13th century, where passion, village pride<\/strong> and medieval<\/strong> atmosphere are the essential elements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Festival of Festivals <\/strong>is an event <\/strong>for food and wine lovers, an extraordinary opportunity<\/strong> to enjoy culinary delicacies<\/strong> and a festive atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Douja d’Or<\/a> <\/strong>is a prestigious wine competition<\/strong> of national scope. During the opening days, visitors have the opportunity to purchase and taste the <\/strong>award-winning wines <\/strong>in the competition and participate in various side events<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fiera di Vicoforte (Vicoforte Fair)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes place in September <\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Stalls of all kinds, animals on display, travelling shows and agricultural machinery exhibitions in the shadow of the basilica.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The traditional “Fera dla Madona<\/a>” is one of the largest fairs in Piedmont<\/strong>, held alongside the religious festival of the Nativity of Mary<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event begins with a procession that arrives from Mondovi<\/strong> in the early morning hours of Sept. 8 and culminates in the Basilica<\/strong> of Regina Montis Regalis with a religious ceremony <\/strong>officiated by the Bishop of Mondovi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International White Truffle Fair of Alba <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes place from October to December<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Fiera del Marrone (Chestnut Fair) in Cuneo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes place in October <\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The main objective of the fair is to promote <\/strong>and enhanc<\/strong>e local chestnut farming<\/strong>, supporting farmers<\/strong> and spreading the culture <\/strong>of the Cuneo chestnut<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event has achieved extraordinary success<\/strong> since its revival, attracting more than one hundred thousand visitors<\/strong>, including many foreigners, who immerse themselves in the narrow streets of Cuneo’s historic center. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chestnut Fair<\/a> acquired the prestigious recognition of “Regional Fair” from Piedmont in 2005 and then the title of “National Fair<\/strong>” in 2009. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fiera della Cisr\u00e0 in Dogliani<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes place in November<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The preparation involves the use of the prized ‘Cece di Nucetto’ chickpea, cultivated right in the Dogliani area.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

A culinary event <\/strong>with a great tradition<\/strong>, it is held during the Saints’ Fair<\/a> on November 2 each year<\/strong> and attracts visitors from all over the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cisr\u00e0<\/a>, a typical soup<\/strong>, is distributed in large quantities <\/strong>during the event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fair is an opportunity to savor this traditional dish<\/strong> and immerse yourself in the authentic atmosphere of the Langhe<\/strong>, with its food and wine and cultural traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fiera del Bue Grasso (Fat Ox Fair) in Carr\u00f9<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes place in December<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the livestock exhibition, there is an expanded weekly market and an exhibition of agricultural machinery and equipment.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The first Fat Ox Fair<\/a> was held on December 15th, 1910 to address the shortage of slaughter animals<\/strong> and rising meat prices. During the event, breeders<\/strong> are publicly awarded <\/strong>with coveted badges and sashes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Palafiera in the Cuneo Alpine Division Square, the traditional no-stop boiled<\/strong> meat festival, organized by the Pro Loco, is also held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nights of Dec. 23 and 24<\/strong> in Dogliani are enlivened by the spectacular living nativity<\/strong> scene, a magnificent representation <\/strong>involving some 350<\/strong> costumed figures<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Considered one of the largest nativity scenes in Italy<\/strong>, the village of Dogliani<\/a> Castello creates an evocative atmosphere<\/strong> thanks to the meticulous reconstruction of scenes within its picturesque medieval alleys<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fiera dei Puciu (Medlar Fair) in Farigliano<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes place in December<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The festival, dedicated to one of the most typical autumn fruits, the medlar<\/strong> (puciu), is held in conjunction with the patronal feast of St. Nicholas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other not-to-be-missed events include the grand Puciu Fair market, the “Colors and Flavors of Langa<\/strong>” tasting<\/strong> lounge of local products<\/strong>, open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the distribution of delicious tripe and chickpea soup<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every 5 December, the municipality becomes the gastronomic capital of the snail.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The Borgo San Dalmazzo<\/strong> Cold Fair is an event with a history of more than 400 years<\/strong>, established by Emanuele Filiberto in 1569. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, the Fair has expanded to include a week of <\/strong>side events <\/strong>including conferences, shows<\/strong>, exhibitions <\/strong>and food festivals, all centered on the snail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fiera del Cappone (Capon Fair) in Morozzo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes place in December<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Morozzo Capon Fair<\/a><\/strong>, has over the years become a major event characterized by a lively and colorful market<\/strong>, accompanied by cultural moments <\/strong>that aim to enhance<\/strong> and keep alive the traditions<\/strong> and rich cultural heritage of Morozzo capon farming. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fair, whose origins date back to the early 1900s<\/strong>, was reinvigorated in the 1950s by distinguished members <\/strong>of the local middle class. In addition to animal displays<\/strong>, the fair offers art contests, markets <\/strong>and tastings<\/strong> celebrating the capon, made famous in Manzoni’s verses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Storica Fagiolata di San Defendente (Historic Bean Festival of San Defendente) in Castiglione d\u2019Asti<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes place in January<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Every year, on the feast of St Defendant on 2 January, beans are distributed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The tradition in Castiglione d’Asti<\/strong> dates back to the 1200s <\/strong>and involves the distribution of beans to the poor<\/strong>. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pro Loco “La Castiglionese” is committed to maintaining the distinctive features of the Fagiolata: the event includes a mass<\/strong>, a historical procession and free distribution of legume soup<\/strong> to those present<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Carnival of Ivrea<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Unique<\/strong> and spectacular<\/strong> carnival with an ancient history<\/strong> that is distinguished by its traditional “Battalion of Oranges,” an engaging<\/strong> symbolic combat<\/strong> between the “orangeries” on foot and horse-drawn “war wagons,” in which oranges<\/strong> are used as weapons<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This tradition is linked to the 12th-century popular uprising<\/strong> against a local tyrant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ivrea Carnival<\/a> is recognized as an<\/strong> intangible cultural heritage of<\/strong> humanity by UNESCO and attracts visitors from all over the world <\/strong>eager to enjoy this extraordinary carnival experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antica Danza degli Spadonari (Ancient Dance of the Swordsmen) in Venaus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes place in February<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Every year, the Spadonari of Venaus<\/strong> perform their famous folk sword dance <\/strong>to honor the town’s patron saints<\/strong>, St. Blaise and St. Agatha, whose feast days fall on Feb.<\/strong> 3 and 5, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This tradition, one of the oldest in the Susa Valley<\/strong>, originated between the 5th and 4th centuries and is meant to celebrate the transition from winter to spring<\/strong>, from death to rebirth, and to invoke fertility for the fields<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ba\u00eco in Sampeyre<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes place in February<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The “Ba\u00eco<\/a>” is a traditional festival<\/strong> held every five years <\/strong>in Sampeyre, Varaita Valley<\/strong>. This millennial event celebrates thecultural identity<\/strong> and resistance of the local community <\/strong>against Saracen invaders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traditional dances<\/strong>, accompanied by authentic melodies played<\/strong> on instruments such as violins and accordions, unite the audience and performers in a collective dance<\/strong> that recalls the historical roots <\/strong>of the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mercu Scurot Carnival in Borgosesia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes place in February <\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The procession sees participants dressed up and carrying a wooden ladle to drink wine along the route.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The Mercu Sc\u00fbrot <\/strong>Festival in Borgosesia<\/strong> is a unique event in Europe<\/strong>, as the carnival reaches its climax on the first day of Lent<\/strong> with a funeral procession <\/strong>symbolizing the funeral of the carnival itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The day ends with the Testament of Peru Magunella, the burning of the puppet<\/strong> representing the town mask<\/strong>, and a fireworks display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sagra del Polentonissimo (Giant Polenta Festival) in Monastero Bormida<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes place in March<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The festival commemorates a 16th-century <\/strong>story in which some boilermakers were stranded in the area due to snow<\/strong> and were rescued by the generous local marquis who fed them with polenta and omelet<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A historical parade is organised starting from the medieval castle, with floats and costumed characters.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

To honor this episode, in addition to the historical parade, there are various animations<\/strong> and re-enactments of ancient crafts<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A giant polenta <\/strong>weighing one ton<\/strong> is prepared and distributed on the main<\/strong> town square<\/strong>, topped with copious amounts of<\/strong> sausage, salami, cotechino, cod and other delicacies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"CANTE'<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Cant\u00e8 J’euv (Egg Quest)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes place during the Easter season<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This custom is often called ‘egg quest’, which disappeared in the late 1950s and was revived in the 1970s.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

This is one of Piedmont’s oldest rituals: toward the end of the Lenten season<\/strong>, groups of young people accompanied by a character called “fratucin<\/strong>” who wore a friar’s disguise <\/strong>and carried a basket on his back, would reach<\/strong> remote farmsteads<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here they <\/strong>sang songs under their windows, waiting for the residents to come out to give them eggs or other foodstuffs in exchange for the auspicious song<\/strong> of Cant\u00e8 J’Euv<\/a>, also known as “Eggs<\/strong> Quest<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Corsa della Torta (Cake Race) in Novara <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes place on Easter Day<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Run is a folk-historical reenactment<\/strong> rooted in distant times<\/strong>, linked to a legend of a foreign siege<\/strong> at Oleggio. The citizens, protected by the walls, were challenged to a race by the opposing soldiers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The competition is held in a meadow called “Cake Meadow<\/strong>” and only unmarried youths<\/strong> can participate according to regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Processione delle Macchine (Procession of Machines) in Vercelli<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes place on Good Friday <\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The procession is a moment of devotion and participation for the whole community.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

A fascinating religious rite<\/strong> that dates back to the 17th century<\/strong> and takes place during Good Friday <\/strong>in Vercelli. The “Machines” are large wooden sculptures<\/strong> representing the Stations of the Cross and are kept in <\/strong>local fraternity churches <\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the procession, members of the confraternities carry the statues on their shoulders along the streets of the city<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Corsa dei Buoi (Ox Race) in Asigliano Vercellese<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes place in May<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Legend has it that in 1436 a plague struck Asigliano<\/strong>, causing death and devastation. The inhabitants, in despair, asked forSt. Victor’s help<\/strong>, promising to make the oxen run slower <\/strong>in gratitude if the plague ceased. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their prayer was answered and the ox race<\/strong> has been celebrated ever since. Historical records date back to 1658, but the destruction of evidence<\/strong> during battles makes it difficult to trace the origins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The patronal festival also includes the distribution of blessed bread<\/strong>, the triumphal float and the candle, sacred symbols. The enchantment of the floats<\/strong> on the Saturday before the festival is a significant moment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Palio<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Palio dei borghi (Palio of the Villages) in Fossano<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes place in June<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The historical re-enactment<\/strong> commemorates the passage of Charles Emmanuel I and Catherine of Habsburg to Fossano in 1585, during their honeymoon from Spain to Turin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In honor of the royal couple, solemn celebrations<\/strong> and a spectacular fireworks<\/strong> display were organized. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The jousting of the goose, abolished in the mid-18th century, is today revisited in a non-violent manner through archery and horse racing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Based on these historical events, a lavish 16th-century costume parade<\/strong> comes to life today, featuring many<\/strong> carefully documented characters of the period<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
