We know how much, as in a bit of everything, the<strong> first step<\/strong> is of <strong>paramount importance<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curiosity about how vineyard <strong>techniques<\/strong> have <strong>changed<\/strong>, renewed or rediscovered, prompted us to question some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/visit\/wineries\/\">producers in Langa<\/a>, Roero and Monferrato about what <strong>natural remedies <\/strong>they use to take care of <strong>their treasure<\/strong>, because that is what it is all about.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result of the <strong>severe climate change<\/strong> taking place, winemakers must modify usual <strong>agronomic practices<\/strong> to help the vines better withstand these significant changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Integrated pest management: sustainable and environmentally friendly viticulture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A<strong> quality cluster <\/strong>comes only from a healthy soil, which needs <strong>care<\/strong>, sensitivity and <strong>attention to<\/strong> be such.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote quote--pull-right quote--is-small typography__quote\"><p><strong>Applicare la lotta integrata significa lavorare insieme alla natura, alla terra in cui si opera: \u00e8 uno dei valori fondanti della nostra azienda<\/strong><\/p><cite class=\"quote__author uppercase--md\">Chiara LANCI <\/cite><span class=\"quote__book serif--sm\">Dosio Vigneti<\/span><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>From this simple but essential premise, the <strong>constant commitment<\/strong> to the environment originates.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Chiara Lanci of <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/business\/dosio-vigneti\/\">Dosio Vineyards<\/a> explains, integrated pest management is a <strong>crop protection<\/strong> practice that aims to prevent and <strong>combat plant diseases<\/strong> by reducing the use of synthetic pesticides as much as possible.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This vineyard management makes it possible to apply a<strong>sustainable agriculture<\/strong>  and to  <strong>low environmental impact<\/strong>  through a series of best practices, from monitoring parameters through stations 4.0 to the  <strong>pathogen control  <\/strong>through sexual confusion implemented by means of pheromones, to agronomic practices of  <strong>controlled grassing<\/strong>  such as green manure.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape-lg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"875\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Dosio-vigneti-2-1400x875.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-200064\" srcset=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Dosio-vigneti-2-1400x875.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Dosio-vigneti-2-900x563.jpg 900w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Dosio-vigneti-2-550x344.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dosio Vineyards<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sexual confusion implemented by means of pheromones<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is <strong>a biological control technique<\/strong> used in agriculture to manage pathogens affecting crops, particularly those in <strong>fruit <\/strong>and <strong>viticulture<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Synthetic sex pheromones are used, which are distributed on crops through special diffusers. The latter <strong>mimic the odor <\/strong>released by females of some species of harmful insects, attracting males to <strong>traps<\/strong> or<strong> diffusers<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, normal mating of insects is prevented and fertilization of females is reduced, thus limiting the <strong>reproductive capacity <\/strong>of the <strong>harmful insect<\/strong> population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>sustainable<\/strong> and environmentally friendly solution, as it reduces the use of <strong>chemicals <\/strong>and limits the<strong>impact<\/strong> on the ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape-lg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"875\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Azienda-San-Michele-vigna-4-1400x875.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-209836\" srcset=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Azienda-San-Michele-vigna-4-1400x875.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Azienda-San-Michele-vigna-4-900x563.jpg 900w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Azienda-San-Michele-vigna-4-550x344.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Green manure in the vineyard: a natural and ecological choice in the production of quality wines  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The practice of green manure is one of the most natural and effective ways to <strong>fertilize the soil<\/strong>, one of the techniques in the vineyard is to<strong> cultivate between the rows of <\/strong>vines certain species capable of <strong>returning nutrients<\/strong>, such as nitrogen, to the soil that <strong>improve fertility<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the green manure crop cycle, green manure crops are buried, either completely or partially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The practice also makes the<strong> soil softer<\/strong>: plant roots make the soil much more friable <strong>by promoting the passage of oxygen into the soil<\/strong>, retains water and has a key function in <strong>preventing erosion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most suitable plants for green manure are <strong>legumes<\/strong>, for example, cowpea, as they <strong>spontaneously produce nitrogen<\/strong>, carbon and other elements that <strong>they release into the soil through their roots<\/strong>, as <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/business\/cantina-moscone\/\">Moscone<\/a> wineries in La Morra and <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/business\/ghiga\/\">Ghiga<\/a> wineries in Castiglione Tinella explain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When alternatives to weed control were few and expensive  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Alessandro of <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/business\/cascina-goregn\/\">Cascina Goregn<\/a> tells us that <strong>we used weed control<\/strong> because there were not many alternatives and certain machinery, which was anyway a prototype of what we have today, represented a<strong> not inconsiderable cost<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, they have always worked with<strong> organic fertilizers such as manure<\/strong> and weeding only <strong>once a year<\/strong>, in the spring, when vigor is at its peak for both vines and <strong>weeds<\/strong>, but during the rest of the season the latter were weeded by hand, with a hoe.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote quote--is-big accent\"><p><strong>Ogni anno utilizziamo pratiche agronomiche volte a favorire la proliferazione di insetti utili o erbe concimanti, cos\u00ec da avere un ecosistema il pi\u00f9 naturale possibile in vigna<\/strong><\/p><cite class=\"quote__author uppercase--md\">ALESSANDRO ALLERINO<\/cite><span class=\"quote__book serif--sm\">Cascina Goregn<\/span><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape-lg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"875\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Vini-3-1400x875.jpg\" alt=\"Goregn-vineyard farmstead\" class=\"wp-image-225707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Vini-3-1400x875.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Vini-3-900x563.jpg 900w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Vini-3-550x344.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cascina Goregn &#8211; and protects<strong>the clusters<\/strong> from<strong>excessive sun<\/strong>, providing them with some <strong>shade<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Topping is a<strong>totally mechanizable operation<\/strong>, while creasing is done by <strong>hand<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pest management and pest control  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/business\/francesco-borgogno\/\">Francesco Borgogno<\/a>, a company in Barolo, has decided like many companies in the area to join the <strong>agri-environmental measure <\/strong>with <strong>SQNPI<\/strong> (national quality system of integrated production) certification. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Always mindful of the environment by eliminating chemical weed killers for years now, with this certification the company wanted to <strong>strengthen this commitment<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It involves applying <strong>production specifications<\/strong> in the vineyard related to tillage with <strong>pest defense<\/strong> and weed control through the use of <strong>specialized machinery<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape-lg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"875\" data-id=\"229927\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Vigneto-barolo-stock-1400x875.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-229927\" srcset=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Vigneto-barolo-stock-1400x875.jpeg 1400w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Vigneto-barolo-stock-900x563.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Vigneto-barolo-stock-550x344.jpeg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rainwater and green roof lawn: the Pelissero method<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.langhe.net\/en\/producer\/pelissero-en\/\">Pelissero<\/a> Winery in Treiso started years ago with a <strong>corporate sustainability project<\/strong> involving all stages of production, <strong>not only the vineyard <\/strong>but everything that revolves around the winery.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong> Rainwater<\/strong>, stored in five collection tanks totaling about<strong> 10,000 hectoliters<\/strong>, is used for all <strong>treatments in the vineyards<\/strong> and for irrigation of the <strong>green areas <\/strong>surrounding the winery.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8216; <strong>electricity <\/strong>that is used on the farm is all certified to <strong>come from sustainable sources<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the roof has been covered with a <strong>green lawn to reduce environmental impact<\/strong> and save energy in air-conditioning the premises, and almost all the <strong>farm machinery <\/strong>is of the latest generation to<strong> reduce pollution<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote quote--is-big accent\"><p>Il mio obiettivo non \u00e8 la comunicazione ma la sicurezza delle persone che lavorano quotidianamente in vigneto<\/p><cite class=\"quote__author uppercase--md\">GIORGIO PELISSERO<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Harvesting the nightshades: Moscone Winery  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nightshades, for the uninitiated, are lepidopterans whose larvae can cause<strong> damage to the vineyard <\/strong>by feeding on buds and young shoots, impairing <strong>cluster formation<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/business\/cantina-moscone\/\">Moscone winery<\/a> in La Morra conducts <strong>manual harvesting of insects <\/strong>in the vineyard for <strong>severalcontinuous days<\/strong> , at night, <strong>from ten o&#8217;clock to midnight<\/strong>, using flashlights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This method is the most <strong>natural <\/strong>and least impactful way to combat the problem as it does <strong>not harm other pollinating insects<\/strong> such as bees, which is the case with the use of chemicals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape-lg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"875\" src=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/cantina-moscone-eventi-1400x875.jpg\" alt=\"moscone winery - events\" class=\"wp-image-226151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/cantina-moscone-eventi-1400x875.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/cantina-moscone-eventi-900x563.jpg 900w, https:\/\/langhe.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/cantina-moscone-eventi-550x344.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Moscone Winery &#8211; vineyard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Agricola Marrone&#8217;s Happy Vineyard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As Denise tells us,<a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/business\/marrone\/\">Agricola Marrone<\/a> works for the<strong> vineyard to be happy<\/strong>. If the vineyard is not stressed and does not suffer, we can expect a favorable vintage and <strong>high quality wine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote quote--pull-right quote--is-small typography__quote\"><p><strong>Cos\u00ec facendo l\u2019anno scorso ad agosto era ancora in vegetazione e abbiamo cimato ancora una volta prima della vendemmia: un successo enorme, considerata l\u2019annata!<\/strong><\/p><cite class=\"quote__author uppercase--md\">DENISE MARRONE<\/cite><span class=\"quote__book serif--sm\">Agricola Marrone<\/span><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Work is done to make sure to keep the <strong>soil soft<\/strong> and raised. This creates an &#8220;<strong>oxygen pocket<\/strong>&#8221; about 30 centimeters below the ground, which allows the roots to stay<strong> cooler <\/strong>and <strong>breathe<\/strong>. The soil is more porous and ready to <strong>store<\/strong> even the smallest <strong>drop of rain<\/strong>, which makes us sigh so much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then a leaf <strong>wall<\/strong> of a dozen or so leaves is left: these become <strong>the plant&#8217;s lungs<\/strong>, and allow it to breathe better, while still going to lower it if the leaves should transpire too much and it should is to leave fewer buds so as <strong>not to bring the plant into water stress<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, by leaving fewer clusters even though the plant could manage to bring more to maturity, you make it<strong> vigorous<\/strong> and it will rest in winter charged with enough energy to <strong>endure the cold season <\/strong>even without rain or snow.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Living soils for quality wines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/langhe.net\/en\/business\/barovero-giorgio\/\">Giorgio Barovero<\/a>, producer of Monforte, says, the first <strong>impact<\/strong>, which would seem trivial, is the <strong>visual<\/strong> one: by not using herbicides &#8220;the vineyard is more beautiful.&#8221;  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are growing <strong>varieties of insects <\/strong>present that are<strong> self-regulating<\/strong> and do no harm or at least these are greatly reduced.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything contributes to <strong>making the soils alive<\/strong>, then <strong>nourishing the vines<\/strong> with all the substances of the soil and finally finding in the glass <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.langhe.net\/en\/product-type\/organic\/\">a wine that better tells about the place from which it comes<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, the benefits are certainly <strong>qualitative on the final product<\/strong> but above all environmental to <strong>ensure our health<\/strong> and that of the many tourists who visit the Langhe each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure
