Wine Tourism in Langhe

Discover our peasant roots, taste great wines and listen to the unique stories of the producers.

Visiting a winery means entering into direct contact with the territory, embracing its culture, its traditions and the community that inhabits it.

The small business size typical of the Langhe means that the tour is conducted directly by the producer himself.

You will then have the opportunity to really confront yourself with who produces the wine and meet those people who, with their daily work, have made the Langhe and their wines what they are today.

You will visit the winemaking and aging premises, and if the weather is nice, take a tour of the vineyards to find out where and how the great wines of the Langhe are born.

The visit will be followed by a guided tasting to try out the products, often accompanying the wine with delicious snacks, sometimes even full meals.

Bassa Langa

The Bassa Langa is actually the northernmost region, between the rivers Tanaro and Belbo.

It is certainly the most famous for Piedmontese wine, characterized by a temperate climate, due to the altitude that never exceeds 600m above sea level.

The wines produced here

Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto d'Alba, Dolcetto di Dogliani, Barbera d'Alba, Pelaverga di Verduno.

Alta Langa

The Alta Langa is the southernmost area, bordering Liguria, and characterized by higher hills that sometimes reach 800m above sea level.

Here the climate is fresh and Apennine, with a production more focused on Metodo Classico.

The wines produced here

Alta Langa, Dolcetto dei Terrazzamenti, Moscato e Barbera.

Roero

The boundary between Langa and Roero is bordered by the Tanaro river.

Here the land is defined by the characteristic Rocche, sandy cliffs on which villages and castles have been built.

The local DOCG takes its name from the area, with the Roero DOCG, the Roero version of Barolo.

The wines produced here

Roero, Roero Arneis, Roero Arneis Spumante, Favorita.

Monferrato

Monferrato is the largest area.

It connects the provinces of Alessandria and Asti and reaches the Ligurian Apennines.

The woods used to reign here, but with the development of wine production, the vines gained more and more ground.

The wines produced here

Barbera d'Asti, Dolcetto d'Acqui e d'Ovada, Grignolino, Ruché, Freisa, Piemonte Bonarda, Cortese di Gavi, Asti, Brachetto, Malvasia e Moscato d'Asti.

Practical instructions

Some informations that should be kept in mind

Since these are small wineries, most of the time you are welcomed into the producer’s actual home. Here are some tips to better enjoy a truly unique experience.

Booking

The reservation is strongly recommended, to inform of your arrival and to guarantee you the best possible experience. For the same reasons it is also important to notify in case of cancellation, in order to let other interested people take your spot!

What to expect

The experience in the cellar has nothing to do with the classic winery tour: it is a real didactic meeting that offers the possibility of coming into contact with the producer and tasting the wines produced in his presence.

How to choose the cellar

The wineries of the Langhe are many and varied, with differences between one and the other that concern more than just the products: you can find producers who welcome you in informal and familiar environments showing you their everyday life, while others believe in a more structured reception.

Some foresee a tasting that can almost replace a meal, with cold dishes and cutting boards, but there are also wineries that – by choice or for organizational convenience – offer you just a few breadsticks.

When choosing, make sure you understand the type of winery you want to visit and find the one that best suits your expectations.

Purchases in the cellar

Another thing to consider is the time of purchase at the end of the tasting: remember that the wine bought directly in the cellar has reduced prices compared to those on the market.

If you think you are interested in some bottles, don’t forget about cash – not all producers accept cards!
